The Run Strong, Recover Smart 5K, an event dedicated to celebrating women in sports, will take place Friday, Feb. 6, at 5:30 p.m., starting at Iron Core Wellness, 104 Bauer Ave.
The Run Strong, Recover Smart 5K is a new event being held during February at Iron Core Wellness, which has hosted various 5K races in the past. The event aims to highlight and support women in sports while also encouraging youth participation in the community.
Cheyanne Mills, owner of Iron Core Wellness, said the idea for the 5K originated with Heart & Soul Women’s Run Club, which wanted to create an event focused on empowering women in sports during the month of February, as well as supporting children and teenagers in the community.
The race route will begin on Cantu Road, continue along Kings Way to Bill Jewel Softball Park at Kings Way and Fox Drive, before turning back and ending at Iron Core Wellness. Mills said the Del Rio Police Department will be on site to assist with traffic control.
More than 15 vendors and businesses will be present at Iron Core Wellness during the event, selling food, activewear and jewelry.
Mills, who has more than 15 years of experience coaching athletes, will also give a presentation on nutrition and mobility and demonstrate dynamic warmups for participants. She said she believes that “movement is medicine” and hopes to give back to the community through local events.
“I just want to give back to the community; the kids need it,” Mills said. “That is what I am trying to do at the gym — getting everybody fed and getting them moving better, feeling better and doing better for themselves. There is room for fitness in everybody.”
Mills said the 5K is open to all genders. Registration is $15, and participants may register before or on the day of the event. Proceeds will benefit the Women’s Booster Club, and those not participating in the race are welcome to make a donation to show their support.
