Del Rio High School will finally get to host its annual golf tournaments beginning this weekend.
The annual Del Rio High School Brown Automotive Girls Invitational Golf Tournament begins Friday morning at the San Felipe Springs Golf Course. The two-day tournament will see five teams compete both days at the San Felipe course only and not the Leaning Pine course at Laughlin Air Force Base.
Del Rio Head Golf Coach Oscar Cardenas expects five teams to take part in the tournament including Eagle Pass High, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, Uvalde, South San and Del Rio. The Queens are the tournament’s defending champions.
The golf season began in the fall, and the Queens were off to a strong start. They had won one tournament in Laredo and finished second in another. The three juniors on the team – Leanna Galindo, Mia Grace Paredes and Lorena Torres – are leading the way and are eager for a shot at a district crown.
The tournament was originally scheduled for the first weekend in February, but the district’s suspensions of UIL activities forced the event to be pushed back. Cardenas said all protocols and guidelines regarding COVID-19, including social distancing, the use of carts and the use of masks, would be adhered to throughout the tournament.
Awards will be presented following the conclusion of play Saturday afternoon.
