Weather has already forced one change at this weekend’s Rams golf tournament. The hope is it doesn’t change anything else.
Del Rio head golf coach Oscar Cardenas said that due to weather, and the delay in teams arriving in town, the annual Brown Automotive Del Rio High School Boys Invitational Golf Tournament will start at 11:30 a.m. Friday versus the usual 9:30 a.m. start.
“Some school’s aren’t traveling (Thursday) due to the weather. South San and Warren said if they have school (Friday), then they’ll travel tomorrow. If there’s no school, then they won’t be able to travel,” Cardenas said Thursday afternoon.
The tournament, which is nearing its third decade of competition, is scheduled to have eight teams including squads from Laredo LBJ, Laredo United South, Laredo Alexander, South San, Warren, Uvalde and host Del Rio.
Both days the tournament will be held at the San Felipe Creek Golf Course. No one will play at the Leaning Pine Golf Course at Laughlin Air Force Base as they have in years past.
Not competing this year will be schools from Eagle Pass. Cardenas said they are not being allowed to travel to compete at all.
“This is the first time in 29 years that we won’t have a team from Eagle Pass competing,” Cardenas said.
Del Rio’s team is comprised of juniors, many of whom have very little golf experience due to their arrival from other sports and the lack of tournaments they could participate in during the 2021-22 season due to COVID and the San Felipe Del Rio CISD’s COVID protocols.
Leading the group are returners Jacob Cowen, Austin Plumb and Andrew Klinck.
“They played in two tournaments in the fall. This will be their first tournament in the spring,” Cardenas said. “We would have played in some others, but the district didn’t let us travel the first two weeks of the year due to COVID rules, which meant no overnight trips.”
The Queens golf team is scheduled to play in its local tournament Feb. 11-12.
