Sports camps are returning to the San Felipe Del Rio CISD this summer, but not every sport will be represented.

Ric Smith, SFDRCISD Athletic Director, released the list of athletic camps being offered by coaches in the school district this summer. Smith explained that due to COVID not every sport the district has to offer was required to offer a camp this summer. Three sports will offer camps – football, tennis and cross-country.

While the camps signal a return to some kind of normalcy for the coaches and student-athletes within the school district, the release explaining the timeline for the camps did include a statement that all COVID-19 procedures would be followed per district, community, UIL and state guidelines.

June 7 marks the beginning of camping season as the Queens and Rams Tennis camp, for incoming seventh through ninth graders, begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Lillie Castellano Tennis Center behind Del Rio Freshman School. The camp will last one hour each day and will run from June 7 to June 10.

On June 9, the district’s Sports Performance Program and open gym will commence at the high school. According to the district, student-athletes wishing to take part in the Sports Performance Program must have an up-to-date physical before they can participate.

The program is for all incoming seventh to 12th graders and is voluntary. The program lasts for 30 days in June and July and will feature six sessions each day, Monday through Thursday. The first session begins at 7 a.m. while the last one begins at 5:30 p.m.

The program is designed to improve the student-athlete’s physical skills. No sports equipment, such as balls, sleds, tackling dummies, etc., will be used. Instead, participants will work to improve their balance, conditioning, strength, speed, flexibility, agility, endurance, coordination, stability, self-confidence and overall performance.

The program is open to participants in all sports, but students can only participate in one session per day. Each session is two hours, but there is a four-and-a-half hour break between session three and session four.

Open gym will follow much of the same schedule. It also begins June 9 and continues for 30 days through July. However, the blocks set aside for open gym are tailored for different sports.

Volleyball will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., girls basketball will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., baseball will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and boys basketball will be from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Baseball will be held at the practice field between the freshman campus and the high school.

The Future Rams Football Camp, for incoming third to sixth graders, begins July 19 at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium. The camp will last for four days – July 19 to July 22 – and will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each day.

The Rams Football Camp, for incoming seventh to ninth graders, begins July 26 at the stadium. It will also last for four days – July 26 to July 29 – and will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

The last camp will be the Rams and Queens Cross-Country Camp, which will be for incoming seventh and eighth graders. It will take place at the Del Rio Middle School camps and will be held July 26 to Aug. 6, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day. That camp will require an up-to-date physical as a fee.

There may be fees required of each camp. For more information regarding camps, parents are asked to contact the athletic department at (830) 778-4350. For more information regarding the Sports Performance Program, parents are asked to call coach Rod Taylor at (830) 778-4338.
