Comstock’s Sebastian Talamantez liked being a state champion in cross-country so much he decided to win it again.
The junior defended his Class 1A Boys State championship this weekend, winning the race at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock by more than 30 seconds over Jose Ventura of Lasara. Talamantez won the state title in a time of 16:10.30. Lasara was second in 16:35.
Talamantez’s performance also helped the Comstock Panthers run away with the Class 1A State team title with 57 points. Zephyr was second with 90 points followed by Tilden McMullen County with 133 points.
Joining Talamantez on the state championship Comstock team were senior Edgar Crane, who was 11th in 17:25.50; senior Gerardo Ibarra, who was 15th in 17:41.80; junior Jordan Allen, who was 23rd in a new personal record time of 18:05.40; sophomore Noah Bahena, who was 24th in 18:06.30; sophomore Mauro Lopez, who was 51st in a personal record time of 18:50.50; and sophomore Neal Billings, who was 125th in 21:16.
Comstock’s girls cross-country team was also represented at the State meet thanks to senior Kennia Lopez. Lopez finished 21st overall in a personal record time of 13:05.40 to bring an end to her high school cross-country career.
