SPORTS — Cross-country teams wrap up non-district schedule

Some of the best runners in the state converged on Round Rock recently in a preview of this year’s State cross country race, and Del Rio was right in the mix.

Three of Del Rio High’s runners competed in the gold division at the McNeil XC Invitational Meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock Sept. 23. The course is the site of the annual State meet held in November.

Aside from the gold division, Del Rio had runners compete in the Class 6A boys and girls divisions along with several hundred runners from schools across the state.

Ely Losoya was the sole male runner from Del Rio to compete in the gold division, finishing 106th out of 165 runners. He completed the course in 16:07.4.

Emily Torres and Kimberly Gloria competed for Del Rio in the girls gold division race. Torres was 31st in 18:13.6, and Gloria was 52nd in 18:43.8. There were 105 runners who competed in the race.

Del Rio fielded a full team for the Class 6A Varsity Boys race. The Rams finished 10th overall out of 59 teams.

Joseph Fuentes led the team, finishing 56th in 16:52.2. Mikael Perez was close behind, finishing 58th in 16:54.2.

Jonathan Mendoza was 66th in 17:01.2, Damian Espinoza was 126th in 17:33.5, Jose Ramirez was 149th in 17:42, Alex Rodriguez was 183rd in 17:57.8, and Rolando Rios was 194th in 18:00.5.

Clute Brazoswood was first with 96 points followed by Edinburg North with 119 points and Del Rio’s fellow 30-6A team Laredo LBJ which finished third with 162 points. A total of 477 runners competed in the race.

Only four Del Rio girls competed in the Class 6A Varsity Girls race.

Ryland Ross was 47th in 20:13.5. Skylar Urias was 119th in 21:05.4. Nayeli Cordova was 175th in 21:45.3, and Cassie Martinez was 219th in 22:22.4.

A total of 416 runners competed in the race.

 

SEGUIN MATADORE XC INVITATIONAL

 

Del Rio wrapped up its non-district schedule this past Saturday with a trip to Seguin to compete in the Matadore XC Invitational.

Del Rio’s girls finished sixth in the Class 5A/6A Varsity Girls division. That finish was spurred on by a pair of top 10 finishers from the team’s top runners. Torres was third overall in 19:04.3, and Gloria was sixth in 19:10.80.

Ross was 42nd in 20:39.35, Urias was 53rd in 21:02.69, Martinez was 68th in 21:29.91, and Cordova was 78th in 21:55.47.

Cibolo Steele was first overall with 84 points. Comal Canyon was second with 111 points, and San Antonio Reagan was third with 134 points.

In the Class 5A/6A Boys race, Del Rio had only five runners compete. The team finished 17th overall.

Fuentes led the Rams as he was 46th in 17:01.75. Espinoza was 69th in 17:25.79. Perez was 94th in 17:55.98, Rios was 96th in 17:57.20, and Rodriguez was 116th in 18:08.54.

 

Del Rio girls were fourth in the Junior Varsity Class 5A/6A race.

Cynthia Rubio was 11th overall to lead the Del Rio running team. She finished in 22:52.47.

Nereyda Martinez was 16th in 23:20.11, Zoey Martinez was 34th in 24:25.91, Payton Becker was 36th in 24:28.22, Natalia Cordova was 43rd in 24:45.18, Isela Gonzalez was 78th in 26:25.22, Melina Ortiz was 92nd in 27:16.55, and Ariana Martinez was 101st in 27:58.30.

Del Rio’s boys were third in Junior Varsity Class 5A/6A boys race.

Andres Rivera cracked the top 10, taking seventh in 18:24.14. Joining him in the top 10 was Joshua Reyes, who was 10th overall in 18:37.44.

Jose Martinez was 22nd in 19:05.25, Samuel Curtis was 26th in 19:13.77, Antonio Padilla was 33rd in 19:21.70, Jose Vielma was 37th in 19:28.51, Miguel Buitron was 50th in 19:48.52, Andres Garcia was 60th in 20:01.51, Adrian Garcia was 69th in 20:08.70, Jose Ortiz was 81st in 20:21.53, Eric Carriaga was 82nd in 20:22.16, Will Fooshee was 103rd in 20:47.95, Eric Flores was 133rd in 21:16.88, Leonardo Rojel was 136th in 21:27.57, Kevin Olveda was 138th in 21:36.14, Jacob Smith was 140th in 21:42.51, Owen Southam was 153rd in 22:14.68, Emiliano De Luna was 166th in 23:08.77, and Juaquin Taylor was 177th in 24:07.21.

 

Del Rio High’s teams won’t compete this week, but they will be preparing for the District 30-6A meet Oct. 14 in Eagle Pass. The top three teams and 10 individuals not attached to a district qualifying team will advance to the regional meet in Corpus Christi.
