Del Rio will have a lot of ground to make up if its wants to win this year’s Brown Automotive boys golf title.

Del Rio’s Blue team sits in third place after the first day of competition at the Brown Automotive Del Rio High School Boys Invitational Golf Tournament. The Rams shot a 428 as a team and trail Laredo Alexander and Laredo LBJ respectively for the team championship.

Only three schools fielded enough players to compete for the team championship, and just four schools were represented at the two-day event. South San is expected to join the group Saturday morning but they will not be eligible for any awards after missing the first day.

Uvalde, South San and Warren did not compete on the first day. Del Rio head golf coach Oscar Cardenas said only South San is expected to arrive Saturday.

Del Rio Blue was led by Diego Tamez and Charlie Hyslop after each player shot a 104. David Suday and Gilbert Riojas each shot 110, and Jacob Cowan shot a 115 to round out the group.

Del Rio White was paced by Austin Plumb, who shot a 112. Julian Fernandez shot a 124, Andrew Guadiana shot a 130, Eligio Flores shot a 141, and Zeke De La Cruz shot a 146. The White team is currently fourth.

Alexander leads the teams with a 348. Nicholas Rocha shot an 83 to lead all golfers on day one. He was joined by Jacob Bruni, who shot an 84; Faraon Garcia, who shot a 90; Nicolas Lopez, who shot a 91; and Ruben Valdez, who shot a 94.

Only the top four individual scores on each team are used to determine the overall team score.

Laredo LBJ is second with a 381. Jesse Valdez shot an 88, Julian Medina shot an 89, Jerry Tovar shot a 94, Alex Pedraza shot a 110, and Alex Cruz shot a 121.

United South was represented by Erik Aguilar, who shot a 119, and Matthew Garza, who shot a 128.

The cold morning weather forced a delay in Friday morning’s tee time. Instead of beginning around 9:30, Cardenas waited until the weather warmed up a bit and had players tee off around 12:30 p.m. Teams were still done around 5 p.m.

Cardenas said if the weather cooperates Saturday morning then teams would tee off around 10:30 with the goal of being done around 2:30 p.m.

The tournament is being played at the San Felipe Springs Golf Course.
