The weather improved, the scores were lower, but no one was catching Laredo Alexander.

The Bulldogs never relinquished the team lead at this weekend’s Brown Automotive Del Rio High School Boys Invitational Golf Tournament, winning with a two-day score of 675.

Alexander was led by Nicolas Rocha, who shot a 164 (83, 81). He was joined by Nicolas Lopez (168 – 91, 77), Faraon Garcia (174 – 90, 84), Jacob Bruni (176 – 84, 92) and Ruben Valdez (179 – 94, 85).

Laredo LBJ was the next closest team with a two-day 759. The Wolves featured Jesse Valdez (171 – 88, 83), Jerry Tovar (191, 94, 87), Julian Medina (196 – 89, 97), Alex Pedraza (221 – 110, 111) and Alex Cruz (233 – 121, 112).

Del Rio 1, which included Diego Tamez, Charlie Hyslop, David Suday, Gilbert Riojas and Jacob Cowen, took third overall with an 837. The team improved 19 shots from Friday’s bitter cold round.

Every Del Rio player shot a lower score on Saturday. Hyslop wound up as the top player for Del Rio with a two-day 204 (104, 100). Tamez finished with a 106 (104, 102), Suday shot a 214 (110, 104), Riojas shot a 216 (110, 106) and Cowan shot a 218 (115, 103).

Del Rio 2 finished fourth overall with a two-day 983. The team shaved 31 strokes off its score from Friday to Saturday.

Austin Plumb led the team with a 212 (112, 100). He was joined by Julian Fernandez (241 – 124, 117), Andrew Guadiana (260 – 130, 130), Eligio Flores (270 – 141, 129) and Zeke De La Cruz (279 – 146, 133).

Del Rio head golf coach Oscar Cardenas said he expected his players to learn from this weekend and improve as the season moves on. He also said he expected his players from Del Rio 2 to win this tournament by the time they’re seniors.

Alexander nearly took all five medalists spots as well. Rocha was first followed by Lopez. Bruni was fourth followed by Valdez. The only non-Alexander player to crack the top five was LBJ’s Valdez, who took third.

Del Rio’s girls team, which was on the course to support their male counterparts this weekend, will take part in the Brown Automotive Del Rio High School Girls Invitational Golf Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday.
