Del Rio High’s tennis program has cause for celebration.
The Queens claimed the District 30-6A Spring Team Tennis title, freshman Andrea Favela is the district’s girls singles champion, and sisters Reagan and Kennedy Treviño are the district’s girls doubles champion.
This year’s Spring district tournament was held at the Lily Castellano Tennis Center in Del Rio. The two-day competition began Saturday morning and wrapped up with the final matches Monday morning.
Favela continued her MVP-caliber season, going unbeaten in three district matches to claim the girls singles crown and advance to the Class 6A, Region IV tournament.
Favela dropped only one game in her first two matches, defeating Romina Hinijosa of Laredo United South 6-0, 6-0, and Brenda Guel of Laredo United 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the finals.
In the finals, she dispatched Laredo United’s Pamela Barragan in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to claim the title. Both she and Barragan are freshmen, so their rivalry will only grow as the two continue their high school careers.
The Treviños earned their spot in the district finals by going 3-0. They defeated Regina Garza and Miranda Leon from Eagle Pass, 6-1, 6-1; beat Grecia del Bosque and Sofia Mora from Laredo Alexander, 6-4, 7-5; and beat Kristina Valadez and Paola Ortega from Laredo United, 6-0, 6-4.
In the finals, the Treviños went up against the team of Kiandra Dominguez and Rosana Caellas from Laredo Alexander. Del Rio won the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 4-6. With teammates and fans cheering them on, the Treviños booked their spot at the regional tournament, and claimed the district title, with a 7-5 win in the third set.
This year’s regional tournament will be held at the Northside Tennis Center in Helotes April 27-28.
Aside from the district champions, Del Rio also placed several of its players and teams in the top five in district.
Alejandra Solar took third in girls singles, making her a regional alternate. Her only loss came against Barragan. She closed out the tournament with a solid 6-4, 6-1 win over Guel.
William Proffit took fourth in boys singles. He went 1-2 in his three matches with the win being a three-set victory over Emilio Ventura of Laredo Alexander, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
The mixed doubles team of Mariana Garcia and Ricardo Mejia were fifth after going 3-1. Their only loss came against Gabriel Fernandez and Zalia Houben of Laredo Alexander, 1-6, 4-6. Fernandez and Houben finished fourth overall.
