SPORTS — Del Rio High runners take on the Islander Splash

Del Rio got to enjoy a little beachfront view over the weekend as the varsity and junior varsity Del Rio High cross country runners competed in Corpus Christi this weekend.

All four teams competed in a 5K in their respective division at the annual Islander Splash event.

Del Rio’s varsity girls team took seventh in Gold Division. The junior varsity team was 33rd in the Large High School division.

Emily Torres added another top 10 finish to her collection as the junior finished ninth overall in 20:09.88. She was one of two Del Rio runners to finish in the top 20 in the gold division as she was joined by senior Kimberly Gloria, who was 16th overall in 20:37.28.

Ryland Rose was 27th in 21:03.18, Cassandra Martinez was 82nd in 23:20.29, Nayeli Cordova was 90th in 23:45.48, and Skylar Urias was 105th in 24:59.69.

The junior varsity team was led by Cynthia Rubio, who was 122nd in 24:35.89. Payton Becker was 149th in 25:09.81, Natalie Cordova was 191st in 26:37.14, Carolyn Leija was 235th in 28:15.49, and Isela Gonzalez was 258th in 30:31.40.

Del Rio’s varsity boys team was 11th in the Gold division and the junior varsity team was 14th in the large high school division.

Junior Ely Losoya was the top Del Rio runner in the Gold division, taking 39th overall in 17:34.58. Jonathan Mendoza was 58th in 18:02.34, Mikael Perez was 75th in 18:25, Jose Ramirez was 78th in 18:29.79, Damian Espinoza was 96th in 18:53, and Rolando Rio was 98th in 18:55.83.

In the large high school division, Del Rio’s Joseph Fuentes was the top finisher from Del Rio High, taking 27th in 18:43.36.

Alex Rodriguez was 64th in 19:20.42, Andres Rivera was 79th in 19:36.17, Jose Ortiz was 123rd in 20:12.13, Emiliano De Luna was 128th in 20:13.92, Jose Martinez was 152nd in 20:35.62, and Joshua Reyes was 174th in 20:57.65.

Del Rio’s varsity and junior varsity runners are slated to travel to the Hoka McNeil Invitational this weekend in Round Rock. The runners will compete at Old Settlers Park, the site of the annual State cross country meet.
