SPORTS — Del Rio High tennis qualifies for playoffs

Del Rio High’s Fall tennis team is on its way to the playoffs.

The Rams and Queens finished third in District 30-6A, earning a spot in the postseason. They’ll take on San Antonio Harlan High School in the Bi-District round of the playoffs Monday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. at Uvalde High School.

Del Rio already has a win over Harlan this season. They defeated the Hawks 16-3 on Sept. 10.

There’s also a Del Rio connection with Harlan Tennis. Assistant coach Jason Torres is a former Del Rio High School graduate and played tennis for Del Rio High in the 1990’s.

The Rams and Queens finished the regular season 14-3 overall and 6-2 in district play. Their only losses came against Laredo United and Laredo Alexander.

Del Rio captured a playoff spot Saturday when they defeated the Laredo United South Panthers, 15-4.

Del Rio went 10-2 in singles paving the way for the win.

In girls singles, Del Rio dropped just one set in their five wins. Andrea Favela and Alejandra Solar each won 6-0, 6-1. Reagan Treviño needed three sets to win her match, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. Twin sister Kennedy Treviño won 7-5, 602, and Dana Mijangos rounded out the wins with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

In boys singles, Max Camarena and William Proffit each won without dropping a game, rolling to 6-0, 6-0 wins. Jose “Pepe” Castañeda was nearly perfect as well, winning 6-0, 6-1. Ricardo Mejia won in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 11-9, and Alexander Beattie rounded out the boys singles wins with a 7-6(7-4), 6-3 showing.

In girls doubles, Favela and Solar won 6-1, 6-2; the Treviños won 6-1, 6-0; and Mijangos and Analiz Rodriguez teamed up to win in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.

In boys doubles, Proffit and Camarena won 6-0, 6-2; and Castañeda and Mejia won, 6-1, 6-3.

Del Rio closed out its regular season Wednesday with a 17-2 win over Eagle Pass.

In boys doubles, it was a clean sweep for the Rams. Camarena and Proffit didn’t drop a game in their 6-0, 6-0 win. Castañeda and Mejia dropped just one game, 6-0, 6-1; and Roger Montemayor and Beattie won, 6-3, 6-4.

The Queens matched the Rams’ efforts, winning all three of their matches without dropping a set. Favela and Marian Garcia won, 6-1, 6-0; Solar and Mijangos won, 6-2, 6-1; and the Treviños won, 6-0, 6-1.

Del Rio’s boys won five of their six matches. Camarena won, 6-0, 6-1; Proffit won, 6-1, 6-0; Castañeda won, 6-3, 6-1; Mejoa was an 8-3 winner, and Beattie won his match, 8-0.

The Queens were even better, sweeping all six of their singles matches and losing just five games along the way combined.

Favela dominated, 6-0, 6-0; Solar was nearly perfect, winning 6-0, 6-1; Garcia rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win; Reagan Treviño and sister Kennedy Treviño cruised to matching 6-0, 6-0 wins; and Mijangos won her match, 6-1, 6-1.
