Del Rio High’s cross-country teams are headed back to the Regional meet.
Both the varsity boys and varsity girls teams finished second at the District 30-6A meet held in Laredo Friday morning. Only the top 10 individual runners and top three teams advanced to the Regional meet.
Del Rio will next compete in the Region IV Cross-Country Meet Oct. 24 in Corpus Christi. The top four teams and top 10 individual runners not affiliated with a qualifying school advance to the state meet. Senior Emily Torres was Del Rio’s representative at State in 2022, marking the 18th consecutive year at least one Del Rio runner competed at the final meet of the season in Round Rock.
Friday, Torres continued her dominant season, winning the District 30-6A Girls Individual Championship for the second time in three years. Only a second-place finish in 2022 prevented her from a third straight district crown.
Torres completed the course in 18:52.247, easily outdistancing Laredo United’s Genesis Serratos who was second in 19:36.992. United won the team title over Del Rio, edging the Queens by four points – 44 to 48. Laredo LBJ placed third to take the last spot for the girls.
Three Queens finished among the top 10 runners overall. Joining Torres were Keziah Bishop, who was sixth overall in 20:12.696; and Reba Salinas, who was seventh in 20:15.900. Ryland Ross finished 16th in 21:15.982, Cynthia Rubio was 18th in 21:34.139; and Alexa Sanchez was 32nd in 23:08.838.
On the boys side, Del Rio finished second to Eagle Pass by six points, 51 to 57. Laredo United was third to round out the regional-qualifying teams.
Del Rio had two of its runners finish in the top 10. Ely Losoya and Jonathan Mendoza, both regional qualifiers last year, led the way for the Rams this year. Losoya finished fifth overall in 16:28.719. Mendoza was sixth overall with a time of 16:34.592.
Laredo Alexander’s Michael Casso won the boys district title in a time of 15:46.422.
