It was a clean sweep for Del Rio Middle School’s cross country teams in Eagle Pass this weekend.

The school’s seventh and eighth grade girls and boys teams finished first in their respective divisions at Saturday’s Border Bash XC Invitational in Eagle Pass. Del Rio was joined at the meet by runners from Eagle Pass, Knippa, Carrizo Springs, Brackettville, La Pryor and Uvalde.

Five of the seventh grade boys from Del Rio finished among the top 10 runners overall, helping lead their team to the championship.

The times and finishing places from the top seven runners from each team were used to determine the team’s overall score. Some schools at the meet did not have enough runners to field a team, so their runners’ finishes counted towards the overall results but were ignored when it came to cumulative results regarding team points and placement.

Jacob Saucedo was Del Rio’s top finisher, taking second overall in 11:55.9. Leo Cavazos was close behind in third place in a time of 11:56.6.

Ethan Jurado was sixth overall in 12:31.4, Jesus Robles was eighth in 13:09.8 and Ray Torres was 10th overall in 13:52.1. Alexavier Medina was 11th overall in 14:01.6, and Carlos Jaquez was 13th in 14:04.9 to round out Del Rio’s top seven finishers.

Like the seventh grade boys, the seventh grade girls also dominated the race, placing five of its runners in the top 10 overall.

Celeste Garcia took second overall to lead Del Rio’s runners. She crossed the finish line in 14:32.4, missing first by just over two seconds.

Karissa Martinez was fourth in 15:10.3, Isabella Valdez was fifth in 15:14.1, Anna Curtis was sixth in 15:22.2, and Hazal Altman rounded out the top 10 finishers from Del Rio by taking eighth in 15:41.5.

Del Rio Middle School’s eighth grade girls team placed just two girls in the top 10 overall, but cumulatively they had four runners finish in the top 10.

Devyn Casillas finished seventh overall to finish as Del Rio’s top runner. She completed the course in 14:59.9. Teammate Reba Salinas was eighth overall in 15:04.3. Cumulatively, they were fifth and sixth.
