SPORTS — Del Rio runners face tough competition at FEAST Meet

Del Rio’s cross-country runners got their first chance of the season to see some of the best teams in the region this weekend at the annual FEAST Invitational meet in San Antonio at the Old Verizon Amphitheater.

The boys team finished 17th out of 36 teams in the High School Varsity Boys 5K race. The girls were 18th out of 31 teams.

The top three teams in the boys’ division were Round Rock, which finished first with 90 points; Austin Vandegrift, which was second with 135 points; and New Braunfels, which was third with 142 points.

The top three teams in the girls’ division were Boerne Champion, which was first with 65 points; Austin Vandegrift, which was second with 84 points; and Comal Canyon, which was third with 170 points.

Ely Losoya was the top male runner for Del Rio, finishing 61st overall in a time of 61:34.11. Jonathon Mendoza finished 133rd overall in 17:31.54. Rolando Rios was 135th in a time of 17:33.39. Damian Espinoza was 146th in 17:40.21. Joseph Fuentes was 161st in a time of 17:52.49. Jose Ramirez was 171st in 17:58.97. Del Rio’s seventh finisher was Mikael Perez, who came in 178th in 18:01.97.

Teammate Alex Rodriguez was right behind Perez, finishing 179th in 18:01.98; and Joshua Reyes was 223rd in 18:41.82.

A total of 307 runners competed in the boys’ race.

In the girls’ race, Emily Torres was the top Queens runner, finishing 38th in a time of 19:27.13.

Ryland Ross was 61st in 20:00.43, Cassie Martinez was 144th in 21:43.12, Skylar Urias was 163rd in 22:10.29, Nayeli Cordova was 180th in 22:31.81, and Mackenzie Pulliam was 241st in 25:23.85.

A total of 271 runners participated in the girls’ race.

Del Rio returns to San Antonio Sept. 10 for the Southwest meet. Both varsity and junior varsity runners are expected to compete at the meet.
