Del Rio Little League’s softball teams are still undefeated in postseason play.
The league’s 10-12-year-old softball team took center stage Saturday night, defeating Eagle Pass 21-8 to advance to the District 35 10-12 Little League Softball Championship game.
There will be three games tonight at the complex located off Frontera Road.
Eagle Pass and Kinney County will meet in an elimination game in the District 35 10-12 Softball Tournament at 7 p.m. at the complex’s Field 3.
Del Rio and Eagle Pass will square off in the semifinals of the District 35 10-12 Baseball Tournament at 7:30 p.m. on the complex’s Field 1. The winner advances to the championship game on Wednesday while the loser will play in an elimination game against Kinney County on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
In the District 35 8-10 Softball Tournament, Del Rio will face Kinney County at 9 p.m. at the complex’s Field 3 with a spot in the championship game on the line. If Del Rio wins, they will play again Tuesday at 9 p.m. If Del Rio loses, they will play Monday at 7 p.m. against Eagle Pass in an elimination game.
10-12 SOFTBALL
Eagle Pass grabbed an early 3-0 lead against Del Rio Saturday, but the host team, backed by a large contingent of fans and supporters, roared back in the bottom of the first inning with five runs to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Keziah Bishop, Alina Mojica, Gabriela Diaz, Amanda Muñiz and Sofia Valdez all reached base and scored in the inning for Del Rio.
After Eagle Pass scored in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 5-4, Del Rio came back and scored four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Bishop, Mojica, Diaz and Alyssa Garcia crossed the plate for Del Rio in the inning.
Eagle Pass continued to make a game of it each time the team came to the plate. They plated three more runs in the top of the third to trim the Del Rio lead to 9-7, but Del Rio’s biggest inning was yet to come.
In the bottom of the third, Del Rio sent 17 players to the plate and scored 12 runs to blow the game wide open.
Eight different girls scored in the third for Del Rio, and three of them scored twice as Del Rio took advantage of Eagle Pass’ troubles behind the plate in keeping the ball from bouncing away to turn each trip to first into a potential track meet.
Bishop, Harlow Riemann and Addyson Vaughan each scored twice. Ryikah Lowe, Diaz, Arianna Gonzalez, Janiah Ross, Garcia and Valdez also scored in the 12-run outburst.
Eagle Pass scored once more in the top of the fourth inning, but Del Rio got the final out on a fielder’s choice and picked up the win via the run rule.
Bishop led the way for Del Rio, scoring four times. She had a pair of singles, walked twice and also drove in two runs. Muñiz also had a pair of RBIs in the win.
Ross was the winning pitcher for Del Rio. She gave up eight runs on nine hits and four walks, but she also struck out five. At the plate, she was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
8-10 BASEBALL
Del Rio Little League suffered its first loss of the tournament season as the 8-10-year-old all-star team was defeated by Eagle Pass, 13-3, in five innings Saturday night.
With only two teams in the tournament, the loss means Del Rio will have to beat Eagle Pass twice to claim the championship. The two teams will play again Monday at 7:30 p.m. If Del Rio wins, then they will play again on Wednesday at 9 p.m. in a winner-take-all scenario.
