Del Rio may finally have its first female state champion in athletics.
Del Rio High School sophomore Kailyn Lomas won first at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association Class 6A State Championship in Frisco March 13 in the 105-pound weight class. This was her second appearance at the state meet.
“She’s already a two-time regional medalist and a two-time state qualifier and now a state champion and we’ve still got her for two more years,” David Gomez, powerlifting head coach, said via text message.
Lomas became Del Rio’s first powerlifting state champion since Michael Riemann won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 at the 123-pound weight class.
The lightest competitor in her weight class, Lomas finished tied with two other girls with a total of 760 pounds lifted, but because she weighed in at 100.8 pounds, three pounds lighter than the next closest competitor she was tied with, she took home the state title.
Lomas recorded a squat of 315 pounds, a bench press of 140 pounds and a deadlift of 305 pounds. According to the THSWPA, Lomas’ totals were in line with her performance during the year. Her squat weight was 10 pounds less than her best effort, which came at the Region V-6A Championships Feb. 26 where she placed third. Her deadlift and bench press totals matched her best performances this season.
Lomas wasn’t the only Del Rio girl to compete at this year’s state championships.
Desi Coronado was third in the 242-pound weight class. She finished with a total weight lifted of 1,155 pounds including a 465-pound squat, a 320-pound bench press, which was the best in that weight class and set a new Class 6A state record in her weight class, and a 370-pound deadlift. Her squat was third best and her deadlift was fourth best in her division. She was also first at the regional meet, setting a Region V record in the squat with 480 pounds.
Rounding out Del Rio’s medalists at the state meet was Chloe Juarez, who was fourth in the 105-pound weight class.
Juarez had a squat of 325 pounds, a bench press of 150 pounds and a deadlift of 260 pounds for a total weight lifted of 735 pounds. Her total was five pounds better than her performance at the Region V meet where she qualified for state with 730 pounds total. She placed fifth at the regional meet.
Two other Del Rio girls competed at the state meet.
Aniah Gonzales finished sixth in the 97-pound weight class. She had a 245-pound squat, a 125-pound bench press and a 215-pound deadlift.
Gabby Diaz was 12th in the 114-pound weight class with a total weight lifted of 675 pounds. She had a 245-pound squat, a 150-pound bench press and a 280-pound deadlift.
As a team Del Rio finished eighth overall. Gomez said 13 girls qualified for the regional meet but the program will only lose three of them to graduation.
“I hope to bring home a team state plaque with these girls,” Gomez said.
