While Del Rio won’t be represented at this year’s State tennis tournament, the players that represented the Queen City at this year’s regional tournament showed they weren’t going to be walkovers for anyone.
Del Rio’s tennis players picked up several wins at the Class 6A, Region IV Tennis Tournament held April 11 and 12 at the NEISD Tennis Center in San Antonio.
Max Camarena, the Del Rio sophomore and District 30-6A boys singles champion, defeated his first round opponent, Noah Garza of Edinburg, in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Not to be outdone, junior Alejandra Solar, the 30-6A girls singles runner-up, was also a first round winner, defeating Corina Salas of Edinburg, 6-3, 6-4.
The only Del Rio representatives to drop their match in the round of 16 was the mixed doubles team of juniors Jose “Pepe” Castañeda and Andrea Favela. They fell to Willow Dymkowski and Danny Karia of Austin High, 6-0, 6-2.
In the quarterfinals, Camarena ran into the number one ranked player in the region, Lathan Skrobarcek of San Antonio Harlan. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Camarena managed to take two games from Skrobarcek in the second set before eventually bowing out, 6-2.
Skrobarcek would eventually win the boys singles regional championship, though he had to rally to do so. He dropped the first set to Marko Mesarovic of Westwood, 6-1, before rallying to a 6-3 second set win. He would eventually win the tiebreaker, 7-6 (8), to claim the title.
Solar’s season also came to an end in the quarterfinals as she fell in straight sets to Westwood Janani Sivakumar, 6-3, 6-2.
The future looks bright for the Del Rio tennis team. All four of the regional tournament qualifiers return next season as does regional alternate Alfredo Solar, who is a sophomore.
