Del Rio will get a crack at the district cross-country title on its turf Friday morning.
The District 30-6A Cross-Country Meet is scheduled to be held in the grounds around Del Rio High School beginning Friday morning beginning at 8 a.m.
According to Del Rio head cross-country coach Vicky Perez, the varsity girls will race first beginning at 8 a.m. The varsity boys will run at 8:30 a.m. Junior varsity girls will run at 9 a.m., and the junior varsity boys will run at 9:30 a.m.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10:30 a.m.
According to San Felipe Del Rio CISD Athletic Director Frenchey McCrea Jr., persons interested in attending the district meet should park on the blacktop/dirt parking lot adjacent to Walter Levermann Ram Stadium. There will be no parking allowed in any school lots. Visitors can then enter the stadium through the west gate atop the hill or the Gate 3, which is the visitors gate near the track.
The top three teams and the top 10 individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the Class 6A, Region IV Championships to be held at Texas A&M Corpus Christi Oct. 25.
Eagle Pass is the defending district varsity boys champions. They qualified for the regional meet last year alongside runner-up Laredo Alexander and third place Laredo LBJ.
On the girls’ side, Del Rio is the defending district champions. They, runners-up Laredo United and third place Eagle Pass qualified for the regional meet.
Junior Mikael Perez and sophomore Ely Losoya are expected to lead the Rams into Friday’s race. Both finished among the top 25 in district last season and both have had strong showings this season. They should be joined by sophomore Hector Trujillo and junior Joseph Fuentes, both of whom ran in last year’s district race. Also looking to contribute will be junior Andres Rivera and junior Jose Ramirez.
As for the Queens, Kimberly Gloria, who finished third at district last season, will look to anchor her team at this year’s race. She will be joined by returners Skylar Urias, a junior, and senior Sydney Ballard, as well as junior Mackenzie Pulliam. Sophomore Emily Torres, junior Cassie Martinez and junior Nayeli Cordova should also contribute at the district race.
Del Rio is looking to send at least one runner to the State meet for the 17th consecutive year. Last year, it was Urias’ older sister Ozlynn who represented the program at the final race of the season in Round Rock.
