Del Rio and their District 30-6A roommates have a new member.
Texas’ University Interscholastic League announced its biannual realignment Thursday morning and Del Rio High School will remain in the same district it has the past two years along with schools from the Laredo United ISD and Eagle Pass High. However, joining the six teams of 30-6A will be Castroville Medina Valley.
The Panthers currently compete in District 13-5A, Division I alongside Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, Laredo Cigarroa, Martin and Nixon, San Antonio Southside, South San Antonio, Southwest and Southwest Legacy. They finished the football season 5-5 but were 5-3 in district, good enough for third place.
They bowed out in the bi-district round to Victoria East, 35-13.
The Panthers have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, but this will also be the fifth different district Medina Valley will compete in since the 2015-16 season. In that time period they qualified for the postseason in seven of those seasons.
There was speculation that Del Rio would become part of a new 30-6A comprised of Del Rio, Eagle Pass High, Medina Valley and San Antonio schools Brennan, Holmes, Stevens and Warren. However, that did not prove to be the case.
According to one source within the San Felipe Del Rio CISD athletic department, Del Rio’s remaining with Laredo and Eagle Pass was “exactly what we wanted.”
The Rams and Queens have competed in what has been dubbed the “Laredo district” since the 2009-2010 season.
UIL didn’t do 30-6A any favors when it came to the first round of the playoffs, though. The new District 29-6A, which would be 30-6A’s bi-district opponents, will now feature Buda Johnson, Cibolo Steele, Comal Canyon, Converse Judson, East Central, San Marcos and Schertz Clemens.
Neighboring schools will also see some new faces.
Brackett High School in nearby Brackettville will compete in District 14-2A, Division 2 next season. They will compete against Center Point, Junction, La Pryor, Sabinal, D’Hanis and Rocksprings. The Tigers competed in 15-2A, Division 2 this past season and had Charlotte as part of its district. Junction will replace Charlotte next season.
The Tigers and Tigerettes will see some different teams in volleyball as well. The new 30-2A will include Brackett, Charlotte, La Pryor, SA Basse Secondary, Sabinal and San Antonio Stacey. Current district foes Center Point and Harper will play elsewhere for district next season.
The alignment will be the same for Brackett in basketball, but joining the six existing teams will be Falls City.
Comstock, located about 30 miles west of Del Rio, moves to District 5-1A for volleyball. It’ll be part of a three-team district that also includes Marathon and Rankin. The district loses Iraan which had been a part of 5-1A the past two seasons.
In basketball, Comstock will play in 31-1A along with Barksdale Nueces Canyon, D’Hanis, Knippa, Leakey, Medina, Rocksprings and Utopia. This season Comstock was in District 10-1A along with Grandfalls-Royalty, Imperial Buena Vista, Iraan, Marathon, Rankin and Sanderson.
