Del Rio High School senior Will Proffit loved the playoffs so much he had to try it again in a different sport.
Proffit, who reached the playoffs as the starting point guard for the Del Rio Rams basketball team, is one of three Del Rio High tennis players who qualified for the regional tournament April 12-13 in San Antonio after their stellar performance at the District 30-6A Spring Tournament April 1-2 in Laredo.
Proffit and his teammate Max Camarena won the boys doubles district championship after going 3-0 in the two-day tournament. Last year Proffit finished fourth in boys singles, making this season’s district title that much more special.
Andrea Favela will join the duo as she won the District 30-6A Girls Singles championship for the second year in a row. Favela, a sophomore, had a first-round bye before going 3-0 in her district matches to advance to the regional tournament.
Favela, the division’s number one seed, started her run with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Julyanna Gonzalez of Laredo United South. She then dispatched Grecia Del Bosque of Laredo Alexander in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the finals against No. 2 seed Darla Lopez of Alexander. It was a hard fought contest, but Favela prevailed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Like Favela, Proffit and Camarena were the No. 1 seeded team in boys doubles. They also had a first round bye and then took on a team from United South in the second round. They won that match, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals against a team from Alexander. Like they had in their first match, the duo only dropped one game, 6-0, 6-1, to reach the finals where they faced off against the division’s second seed, also from Alexander. But Del Rio’s duo would not be denied and they claimed the district championship in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
As a team, Del Rio’s girls finished third and the boys team finished fifth at district.
Alejandra Solar took third for the second consecutive year, losing just one match at the tournament. She knocked off Jackqueline Longoria of Laredo LBJ and Romina Hinojosa of United South without dropping a game. In the semifinals, she fell to Lopez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, before bouncing back in the third place match and defeating Del Bosque.
Del Rio twins Reagan Treviño and Kennedy Treviño, who won the girls doubles district championship last year, finished third this year. They entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and won their first two matches against Laredo Alexander, 6-3, 6-2; and United South, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). In the semifinals, they went up against the number one seed from Laredo United and were defeated in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. They then finished the tournament with a tough three-set loss to another team from Alexander, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6.
The Treviño’s teammates Destiny Jenkins and Dana Mijangos finished fifth overall. They beat the team from Laredo LBJ in three grueling sets, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, before suffering their only defeat to a team from Alexander, 6-1, 6-0.
The duo did bounce back to beat a team from Eagle Pass, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0, and another team from Alexander, 6-4, 7-5.
On the boys’ side, Jose “Pepe” Castañeda took fifth in boys singles. He, too, lost only one match. He defeated Hector Rodriguez of United South, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to second-seeded Alex Ventura of Laredo Alexander, 6-7 (2-7), 1-6. Castañeda capped the tournament with wins over Alan Langley of Eagle pass, 6-0, 6-2, and Andrei Chavarria of Laredo Nixon, 6-3, 6-4.
The team of Rogelio Montemayor and Jacob Moss lost their two matches at the district tournament, falling to Eagle Pass, 6-3, 6-3, and LBJ, 4-8.
The Class 6A, Region IV tournament will be held April 12-13 at the McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio.
