SPORTS — Del Rio’s Curtis qualifies for regional cross-country meet

Del Rio’s cross-country season continues into the regional meet.

Junior Samuel Curtis finished fourth overall in the varsity boys race at Friday’s District 30-6A Cross-Country Meet to earn a spot at the Region IV Cross-Country Meet at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. He will run at 11 a.m. Oct. 21 as part of the Class 6A Boys race.

Curtis finished the course that snaked through the practice fields at Del Rio High School and Del Rio Freshman School in 15:55.9. The top 10 runners not associated with the four regional-qualifying teams earned a spot to run at the regional meet.

Laredo United’s Aaron Vidaurri won the individual boys title. The senior finished the course in 15:44.2. Rounding out the top five were Medina Valley sophomore Nicholas Castro, who finished in 15:47.7; Eagle Pass freshman Alex Alvarez, who finished in 15:47.9; and Laredo Alexander junior Anthony Gonzalez, who finished fifth in 16:02.1.

Curtis was one of several Del Rio runners to compete in the varsity boys race. Senior Jose Martinez was 21st in 16:50.9. Junior Antonio Padilla was 23rd in 16:54.7. Freshman Ray Torres was 25th in 16:55.5. Junior Jose Vielma was 26th in 16:56.4. Senior Eric Cariaga was 37th in 17:31.6. Sophomore Julyus Calderon was 46th in 18:34.

Eagle Pass claimed the team title with 56 points. Medina Valley was second with 69 points. Laredo Alexander was third with 71 points, and Laredo LBJ was fourth with 79 points. Del Rio finished fifth with 99 points.

Youth dominated the varsity girls race as three freshmen finished among the top 10 overall.

Medina Valley freshman Peyton Price won the individual title with a time of 19:15.3, more than 11 seconds better than her next closest competitor, sophomore Samantha Villezcas from Laredo Alexander, who finished in 19:26.9.

Rounding out the top five were Laredo United South junior Elina De La Rosa, who was third in 19:36.3; Medina Valley freshman Kadian Hunt, who was fourth in 19:40.1; and United South junior Camila Galvez, who was fifth in 19:46.1.

Del Rio’s top finisher was junior Ryland Ross, who was 19th in 20:28.5. Joining Ross was freshman Natalia Bosko, who was 26th in 20:58.5; junior Alexa Sanchez, who was 36th in 21:52.4; senior Kaylie Morales, who was 37th in 21:55.2; freshman Hailey Dobbins, who was 38th in 22:03.4; and junior Nereyda Martinez, who was 44th in 23:54.

Laredo United South took the team title with 38 points, buoyed by three top 10 finishers. Medina Valley was second with 43 points. Laredo Alexander was third with 75 points, and Laredo United was fourth with 96 points.

Del Rio finished sixth with 156 points.

Del Rio’s cross-country program did capture the junior varsity boys team championship with 50 points. They just edged Medina Valley, who was second with 53 points.

The Rams had 24 runners compete in the junior varsity division, but only the times of the team’s top seven finishers counted towards the team title.

The top finisher for Del Rio’s JV boys team was junior Jason Main, who was third overall in 17:25.6. He was joined in the top 10 by senior Leonardo Rogel, who was ninth in 17:45.1, and sophomore Daniel Perez, who was 10th in 17:45.8. Rounding out the Rams’ top seven were freshman Alexavier Medina, who was 13th in 18:03.3; senior James Main, who was 15th in 18:10.6; freshman Jesus Robles, who was 17th in 18:15.9; and freshman Christian Medina, who was 18th in 18:18.1.

Also running for Del Rio was sophomore Alexander Perez (27th,18:50.6), sophomore Reynaldo De Los Santos (32nd, 19:01.3), junior Luis Rodriguez (34th, 19:08.9), sophomore Abraham Garcia (36th, 19:11.3), sophomore Isau Salazar (40th, 19:20.7), freshman Carlos Jaquez (41st, 19:21.2), senior Nikolai Kalinchuk (46th, 19:32.4), junior Amari Williams (48th, 19:38.2), freshman Lucas Bryant (53rd, 19:57.8), sophomore Abraham Cardenas (67th, 20:48.7), sophomore Kevin Ibarra (69th, 20:58.7), freshman Jesus Gonzalez (74th, 21:06.3), junior Isaac Gonzalez (77th, 21:33.2), junior Joaquin Taylor (80th, 21:56.2), junior Ricardo Garcia (84th, 22:19.7), and Alan Huerta (88th, 23:25.9).

Medina Valley freshman Brayden Riley won the junior varsity boys title with a finishing time of 17:14. He edged teammate Payton Defelippis, a junior, who finished in 17:15.6.

Del Rio’s junior varsity girls team was fourth overall with 101 points. Medina Valley won the team title with 45 points.

The Queens were led by freshman Desiree Perez, who was 13th overall in 22:33.9. Del Rio’s top seven finishers were all freshmen and were part of the 11 freshmen runners overall who competed for the JV Queens.

Finishing in the top seven along with Perez were freshman Reagan Becker, who was 15th in 22:45.2; freshman Valentina Contreras, who was 21st in 23:05.9; freshman Karissa Martinez, who was 23rd in 23:10.5; freshman Celeste Garcia, who was 30th in 23:58.6; freshman Elyana Gauna, who was 32nd in 24:03.8; and freshman Anna Curtis, who was 33rd in 24:04.4.

Also competing for the JV Queens was freshman Mariana Quintero (35th, 24:13.4), freshman Galilea Hernandez (36th, 24:17.6), sophomore Debrah Beltran (37th, 24:18.3), freshman Amara Clemens (45th, 25:22.4), sophomore Genesis Castaneda (51st, 26:18), freshman Eva Medrano (53rd, 26:24), sophomore Bella Montemayor (55th, 26:41), junior Arianna Martinez (65th, 29:12.6), sophomore Hannia De Leon (67th, 30:16.5), and sophomore Camila Berain (68th, 30:24.1).

Laredo United South sophomore Danielle Lara finished first overall in 21:23.0, just beating out Laredo United sophomore Miranda Lopezorduna by two-tenths of a second.
