Del Rio improved upon its showing from last year, but the Queens still couldn’t bring the annual Del Rio High School Brown Automotive Girls Invitational Golf Tournament trophy back home.

The Laredo United South Lady Panthers walked away with this year’s title Saturday at the San Felipe Springs Golf Course. South shot a 383 on Friday to jump out to a 31-shot lead. They finished with a 380 on Saturday to complete their win.

Del Rio finished second with an 818 after team scores of 414 and 404. The team finished third last year.

Rounding out the top five were Eagle Pass (452, 452 – 904), El Paso Jefferson (476, 479 – 955) and Laredo LBJ (473, 483 – 956). Also taking part in the tournament were El Paso Irvin, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, El Paso Austin, Laredo United, Laredo United South, South San and San Antonio West Campus.

United South was led by a trio of golfers that finished in the top five overall. Leslie Rodriguez won the individual title with a 174 after shooting rounds of 89 and 85. Her teammates Anica Cantu and Abi Salinas joined her in the top five.

The talented trio were joined by Jessica Leal, who shot rounds of 102 and 107 for a 209; and Emily Guerra, who shot a 128 and a 118 for a 246.

Del Rio was powered by senior Adali Hernandez. Hernandez shot a 98 on Friday, but improved her performance by shaving three strokes off her total Saturday for a 95 and a two-day 193.

Hernandez was the only member of the Queens to shoot below 200. Joining her on the Del Rio team were Joelda Alcaraz (98, 103 – 201), Becca Mitchell (108, 95 – 203), Camila Esquivel (114, 111 – 225) and Camila Rocha (110, 121 – 231).

United South took the top two spots among all golfers thanks to the performances of Rodriguez and Cantu. Del Rio’s Hernandez was third following by Eagle Pass’ Regina De La Cabada, who shot a 200 after rounds of 96 and 104; and United South’s Salinas.

De La Cabada and Rodriguez each placed in the top five at this event last year. Rodriguez was second while De La Cabada was fifth.

During the awards presentation, Del Rio head golf coach Oscar Cardenas took time to recognize his seniors – Hernandez and Alcaraz – for their time with the program and their efforts both on and off the golf course.

This will not be the final time Del Rio’s girls play on the San Felipe course. Del Rio is set to host the District 30-6A boys and girls golf tournaments later this year.
