Del Rio’s spring tennis team rolled into the Class 6A, Region IV Spring Tennis Tournament with hopes of moving on to the state tournament.
Senior William Proffit and freshman Max Camarena competed in boys doubles after winning the District 30-6A boys doubles championship. Sophomore Andrea Favela competed in girls singles after winning the district championship in that division for the second consecutive season.
The regional tournament started well for Del Rio. Proffit and Camarena won their opening match against William Buford and Stanton Keath from Harlingen in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Their second match found them set up against Jon Totorica and Deuce Daniel of San Antonio Reagan. Del Rio’s team fought hard, but fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, bringing an end to their season.
Favela started her run at the regional tournament against Hanna’s Alyssa Luna. Favela dropped just one game in the first round, winning 6-1, 6-0.
In round two, Favela took on Kimberly Duncan of San Antonio Johnson. The first match was a close fight as they needed a tiebreaker to decide a winner in the first set. Duncan won that first set, 7-6. The close first set took a lot out of both players, but Favela was unable to keep pace with Duncan in the second set, falling 6-1 and seeing her season come to an end.
Del Rio head tennis coach Nolan Pritchard had nothing but good things to say about his young players, and offered his thanks to all this year’s players.
“I’m super proud of these kids and stepping blocks for next year’s team,” Pritchard said. “I just want to say, ‘good luck,’ in the future to all eight of our graduating seniors.
