For the second consecutive year, Del Rio’s Emily Torres is one of the top 50 Class 6A female runners in the state of Texas.
Torres, a junior at Del Rio High School, finished 40th at the Class 6A State Girls Cross Country Meet held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Last year, Torres finished 41st overall.
Torres finished the 5K course in 19:21.9. She was 40th out of 150 runners.
This marked the 18th consecutive year that Del Rio was represented at the State meet with Torres being the sole representative in each of the past two years.
The daughter of Ray and Raquel Torres, Emily Torres was the 30-6A Girls Cross Country champion. She finished 13th at the regional meet that year, but qualified for state as three of the runners ahead of her qualified for state through their teams.
This year Torres was second at the district meet and finished 12th at regionals in 19:22.99, but qualified for state as one of the top 10 runners not affiliated with a state-qualifying team.
Lewisville Flower Mound junior Nicole Humphries was this year’s state champion in Class 6A as she finished the race in 17:36.4. She narrowly edged her sister, Samantha Humphries, for the top spot. Their finish helped Lewisville Flower Mound claim the state team championship over Southlake Carroll.
