When Del Rio High head golf coach Oscar Cardenas first met the Diaz brothers, he told anyone who’d listen that the duo would take the Rams golf team to state.
Recently, they completed the first step on their journey to state.
Led by senior Isaac Diaz and freshman Isaiah Diaz, the Del Rio Rams rolled to the District 30-6A Boys Golf Championship in Laredo and advanced to the regional tournament April 15-16 at the Cedar Creek Golf Course in San Antonio.
It was the second consecutive district championship for the Rams.
Del Rio shot out of the gate with a 305 on day one including Isaac’s 72 and Isaiah’s one-over par 73. Teammates Ethan Jurado and Juan Pablo Cortez did their part by each shooting 80, and Alan Guadiana fired a 105 to round out the team.
But on day two, the Rams shaved six strokes off their total and secured the team championship.
Isaac won his fourth consecutive individual championship, wrapping up the gold medal with a three-under 69 to finish with a two-day 141. Younger brother Isaiah finished as the district’s silver medalist, shooting 75 on day two to finish with a 148. Jurado captured the bronze medal by shooting 72 on day two, lowering his two-day tally to 152.
Cortez shot an 83 to finish with a 163, and Guadiana had the biggest improvement of the team, knocking 14 strokes off from his day one score to shoot a 91 on day two and finish with a 196.
Isaac, Cortez and Jurado were a part of the district-winning team last year. Jurado finished second last year.
Isaac Diaz will be looking for his third consecutive trip to the state tournament. He finished tied for 13th last year after rains washed out the second day of competition.
Del Rio’s other boys team in the tournament finished with a two-day 769. Included in the team were Maximiliano Ramon (94, 92 – 186), Angel Narvaez (95, 94 – 189), John Montalvo (97, 97 – 194), John Caban (101, 99 – 200) and Isaac Brown (105, 101 – 206).
