Del Rio freshman Isaac Diaz is living up to the early-season hype.
Diaz, a multiple time winner in youth golf tournaments across the country, took first place at this weekend’s RGVGCA Tournament with a two-day 146. He shot a one-under 71 on the first day of the tournament, and then shot a 3-over 75 on day two.
His showing also helped the Del Rio boys team finish fourth overall. Joining Diaz were Andrew Klinck (86, 93 – 179), Austin Plumb (91, 92 – 183), Mark Peña (92, 96 – 188) and Julian Fernandez (92, 96 – 188).
With only the four lowest scores being used to determine the team’s overall score, the Rams finished with a 696.
This was Diaz’s second high school tournament win of 2023. He also took first at this year’s Del Rio High School Brown Automotive Invitational Boys Golf Tournament held earlier this month at the San Felipe Springs Golf Course.
Del Rio’s girls finished third in their division with a two-day score of 818.
Rebecca Mitchell was the top golfer for the Queens, shooting a 187 thanks to rounds of 92 and 95.
Joelda Alcaraz shot a 201 (97, 104), Adali Hernandez shot a 203 (99, 104), Camila Guzman shot a 227 (110, 117) and Camila Esquivel shot a 235 (114, 121).
The Queens previously finished second at this year’s Del Rio High School Brown Auto tournament held here in February.
