SPORTS — DRHS inches closer to resuming sports

By Brian Argabright

A return for winter sports could come as early as this week.

According to San Felipe Del Rio CISD Athletic Director Ric Smith, Del Rio High School’s winter sports, including basketball, swimming and soccer, had its players and coaches voluntarily screened Monday using the district’s COVID antigen test.

If the tests come back to the district’s liking, and the community’s cumulative positivity rate is at a level the district approves, then UIL activities could resume as early as Tuesday.

“Depending on those results, combined with a lowering community positivity rate, we can possibly begin practices on Tuesday,” Smith said.

Smith added that the final decision would lay with Superintendent Dr. Carlos Rios.

The high school’s spring sports, including baseball, softball, track and field, golf, tennis and powerlifting, will undergo testing next week on Monday and Tuesday.

As for when games would resume, Smith said that would depend on the Del Rio’s opponents.

“We will release an updated list of rescheduled games as soon as we know the agreed upon play dates,” Smith said.

Del Rio High initially suspended its UIL activities Jan. 6 due to the high COVID-19 positivity rate in the community. The suspension was meant to last two weeks, but was extended Jan. 15.

At the time of the suspension, the community cumulative positivity rate was 35.90 percent. As of Jan. 22, the rate was at 18.32 percent.
