At the rate the Del Rio girls powerlifters are excelling, don’t be surprised if the entire team qualifies to compete at the regional meet later this year.

Del Rio’s eighth different lifter from the girls team hit her qualifying weight this past weekend at Somerset’s Marvin Allen Bulldog Invitational Powerlifting Meet to earn a spot at the regional meet. Gabby Diaz, who was third in the 114-pound weight class with 645 pounds total, joined her teammates with her qualifying weight.

Head coach David Gomez said the list of qualifying girls may not yet be complete.

“The top 12 in each weight class go to regionals. These girls are just hitting that magic number. We’re hoping for two more to hit the total this week and I believe that we’ve got about 15-16 girls ranked in the top 15 of their respective classes,” Gomez said.

As a team Del Rio finished second.

Desi Coronado, who is already a regional qualifier, had the meet of her career. She took first in the 242-pound division with a total weight of 1,085 pounds. She also set school records in girls powerlifting with overall best total weight, overall best squat at 475 pounds and overall best bench with 250 pounds.

Betsally Garcia, also a regional qualifier, took first in the 148-pound division with a total of 925 pounds lifted.

Other lifters included Aniah Gonzales, who was second in the 97-pound division; Kailyn Lomas, who was second in the 105-pound division; Caitlyn Gonzalez, who was second in the 198-pound division; Tori De Los Santos, who was second in the 242+ division; Chloe Juarez, who was third in the 105-pound division; Maritssa Robles, who was third in the 132-pound division; and Zatchel Contreras, who was fourth in the 181-pound division.

As for the varsity boys team, it finished first overall.

Three Rams took first in their respective divisions.

Moses Fernandez was first in the 181-pound division with 1,335 pounds. Caleb Rodriguez was first at 220 with 1,520 pounds, and Joaquinn Fuentes was first at 308 pounds with 1,590 pounds lifted.

Six Rams finished second including Tadeo Talavera (123 pounds), Jorge Herrera (165 pounds), Luis Rodriguez (181 pounds), Domingo Sanchez (198 pounds), George Avalos (242 pounds), and Joe Meza (Super Heavyweight).

Tristan Coronado was third in the 165-pound division, Frankie Guzman was fourth in the 148-pound division, and Jakob Mendoza was fifth in the 114-pound division.

Gomez said the boys’ last day of competition would be Feb. 24 and the official list of regional qualifiers should be announced about Feb. 27.

Del Rio will host its powerlifting meet Saturday at Del Rio Middle School. Bars will be loaded and the competition will begin at 9 a.m. Seven out of town teams are expected to compete with Del Rio at the meet including Crystal City, Uvalde, Laredo United South, Laredo Cigarroa, San Angelo Central, Rocksprings and Leakey.
