SPORTS — Favela, Proffit lead Del Rio High tennis with singles wins

As the spring tennis season draws closer to the district tournament, Del Rio’s boys and girls teams are sharpening their skills with the hopes of moving into the playoffs.

Del Rio players finished well at their most recent tournaments in Kerrville and Uvalde, bringing home several individual honors.

At the Kerrville Tivy Antler Invitational, Andrea Favela and William Proffit each took first place in their respective singles divisions.

Favela went 4-0 in girls singles, dropping only one set on her way to the championship. She defeated opponents from Uvalde (6-4, 6-2), Liberty Hill (6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1) and Wimberly (4-6, 6-2, 10-7).

Proffit was equally as strong. He also went 4-0, but did not drop a set in his run to the title. He defeated opponents from Wimberly (6-3, 6-3), Uvalde (7-5, 6-2), Fredericksburg (6-1, 6-2) and Ambleside (6-2, 7-6(7-2)) on his way to the singles crown.

Also competing at Kerrville were the following:

 

Girls Singles

Alejandra Solar went 2-2, defeating opponents from Wimberly (6-2, 6-2) and Fredericksburg (6-0, 6-1). She lost to opponents from Liberty Hill (5-7, 2-6 and 2-6, 3-6).

 

Boys Doubles

Adrian Rivera and Aiden Darden dropped all three of their matches in boys doubles. Two of the matches the lost in straight sets, but did win a set in a three-set thriller against Floresville.

The team of Rogelio Montemayor and Jacob Moss also went 0-3 in competition, but did not win a set in any of their matches.

 

Girls Doubles

The team of Kennedy Treviño and Reagan Treviño went 1-2 at the tournament, earning a straight set win over their opponents from Wimberly (7-5, 6-2).

They lost in straight sets to teams from Fredericksburg and San Angelo Central.

The team of Lexi Esquivel and Destiny Jenkins also went 1-2, defeating their opponents from Floresville in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 10-2.

 

Mixed Doubles

Mariana Garcia and Ricardo Mejia won one match and dropped three others at the Kerrville tournament. They beat their opponents from Kerrville Tivy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, but lost in straight sets to their opponents from Uvalde and in two tough three-set matches against Liberty Hill and Wimberly.

 

Next up for Del Rio was Uvalde and the Pre-District Tournament.

Favela and Proffit again took first place in their respective singles division. Teammates Solar and Alberto Flores finished second in their respective divisions.

In girls doubles, the Treviños finished third.
