A former Del Rio quarterback will take his talents to West Point.
Zachary Taylor, who served as the Del Rio Rams starting quarterback the past two seasons, has committed to play football for Army through its military academy at West Point. The announcement was made by Taylor Sunday on his Twitter page, @Zachary31748722, as well as on Taylor’s father Roderick Taylor’s official Facebook page.
Taylor’s post features an Army player with his name, the phrase “Built for the Brotherhood” and the word “Committed” printed in large letters across the bottom of the post.
The younger Taylor will play for Yoakum this season after transferring to the school following his father’s departure from the San Felipe Del Rio CISD. Rod Taylor served as the Rams head football coach from January 2019 until November 2022 when he was reassigned from his duties as head coach. He has since accepted a coaching position at Yoakum.
Taylor was a two-year starter for the Rams, earning district newcomer of the year as a sophomore and first team all-district honors as a junior. He was also a regional qualifier in track.
Taylor had a busy offseason this year, visiting a variety of colleges including Texas State, Tulsa, Sam Houston State West Virginia and West Point. According to his Twitter bio, Taylor stands 6’4” and weighs 160 pounds. He also posts that he runs a 4.48 40-yard dash which should prove to be an asset for the Black Knights.
Army head coach Jeff Monken has already made news this offseason by abandoning Army’s traditional triple option offense in favor of a more modern style of attack. Taylor could be just the weapon Monken needs to move Army’s offense in a new direction.
