Saturday night’s pro wrestling show is bringing more than just another round of lucha libre action to Del Rio. It’s also bringing several familiar faces to the Queen City.
Rudy Gonzalez, Texas Wrestling Entertainment owner/promoter, said the turnout and reaction to the last lucha libre show in Del Rio was so great that another one was almost a foregone conclusion.
“I thought it was one of the better shows we’ve done in Del Rio. It ranked right up there in terms of crowd participation. There was a guy there who was celebrating his birthday and the girls went out there and gave him a little birthday present and that helped get the crowd going,” Gonzalez said. “The fans were behind everything. We took an intermission and it was supposed to be for about 10 minutes but the wrestlers were selling so many shirts and taking pictures with so many fans that we had to extend intermission.”

As of Tuesday, the main event for the show, which takes place Saturday night at the Del Rio Civic Center beginning at 7 p.m., pits a pair of pro wrestling veterans against each other as former Ring of Honor tag team champion, Combat Zone Wrestling and Lucha Underground alum Ricky Reyes takes on former ECW World Television Champion, All Japan World Champion, and WWE alum Super Crazy.
This will be Reyes’ third time in Del Rio and Super Crazy’s Del Rio debut.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ricky. This may be the first time he and Super Crazy meet in the ring,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said Super Crazy has been on his wish list for a while now, so getting the chance to bring him to Del Rio is something of a dream come true.
“I’ve been trying to use him for years now, but that dude is so busy. He’s everywhere! I spoke to him after the last show and when we talked about coming back he asked when and I told him. He said let me check my dates and when he said, ‘I’m available,’ I thought to myself, ‘Finally,’” Gonzalez said.
Also scheduled to be in action are the Lucha Heros as they take on the team of Dyl Dempsey and Rackzo, aka Bad Company.
“The Lucha Heros really stole the show last time. The fans really took to them, so it made common sense to add them to this show. They did a really good job last time they were in Del Rio,” Gonzalez.
The other big title match set for Saturday pits Del Rio favorite, and American Combat Wrestling Women’s Champion, Myka against Shine Champion Ivelisse.
A former Lucha Underground Trios Champion, and a former wrestler in AEW and Impact, Ivelisse has kept an eye on Myka’s rise through the ranks of Shine. Now the Shine Champion has decided to put her title on the line against the Texas veteran.
“She has been watching Myka and said she was willing to come down here and defend her title against her if she was up to it. I met her when she was Lucha Underground and she’s always had a lot to say. She’s a pretty cool chick and she says what she says, but she stands behind it. Most wrestling fans know she and Thunder Rosa (current AEW Women’s Champion) had some beef, and she saw Myka wrestle Thunder Rosa and told me, ‘I think we can have a better match than Myka and Thunder,’” Gonzalez said.
Other matches scheduled for Saturday include Viki defending the Texas Women’s Championship against Sabino Blaze, JLP taking on TWE newcomer Imon, and several other matches.
Gonzalez is excited for Imon to show what he can do in front of fans. He just had his first match this past Saturday, but Gonzalez is already comparing to some of TWE’s more famous alumni.
“I just trained him. He’s only been training for a few months, but he’s in that same group as Brian Kendrick and Bryan Danielson. He picks things up like a sponge. He’s always listening, always paying attention. I think we may have something here,” Gonzalez said.
Local food truck Rylee’s Roadhouse will also be on site to sell eats and treats for fans.
