SPORTS — Golf, soccer, tennis recognize top student-athletes

Performances on and off the playing field were recognized as Del Rio High School’s student-athletes in soccer, tennis and golf were honored in a ceremony Wednesday.

Academic and athletic achievements were cited as the top student-athletes in each of those sports were presented with certificates of achievement and plaques for team honors.

The Queens soccer team was the first to be recognized as head coach Wilber Rivas started things off by naming sophomore Carolyn Valdez as the Most Outstanding Junior Varsity Player of the Year.

After recognizing Del Rio’s all-district honorees, Rivas handed out the team’s individual honors.

Sophomore Daniella Trujillo and freshman Hayden Garcia were named co-Newcomers of the Year.

Sophomore Kaylee Hernandez and senior Nicole Martiarena were recognized with the Most Improved/Dedication award.

Junior Daniela Quintero was named Goalkeeper of the Year.

Junior Alexis Segura and senior Xitlali Guadalajara were honored as co-Defensive Players of the Year.

Senior Laurie Ignacio and sophomore Noelia Ibarra were named co-Midfielders of the Year.

Junior Alondra Sanchez and senior Mia Ortiz were named co-Offensive Players of the Year.

Sophomore Monika Gonzalez was recognized as the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Head coach Tani Canchola introduced the honorees from the Rams soccer team next.

Junior Ely Losoya was presented with the Team Spirited/Leadership Award.

Senior Adrian Ramos was named Most Improved.

Freshman Josue Fernandez was recognized as the Newcomer of the Year.

Senior Joshua Renteria was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year.

Sophomore Esteban Saucedo was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Senior Alfain Peñaloza was recognized as the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Senior Cesar Piña was presented with an honorary award from the Antler Classic due to his perseverance and team spirit following a season cut short by injury.

Rams tennis coach Enrique Santillan doled out the awards for both the Rams and Queens tennis teams.

David Garza was named the Rams Newcomer of the Year. On the Queens’ side, Sara Perez won the honor.

Most Improved Junior Varsity honors went to Braden Boyd and Paulette Cuellar.

Most Improved Varsity honors were presented to Jose Castañeda and Alfredo Solar for the Rams and Julia Gomez and Anna Rendon.

The Fighting Heart Award went to Ryan Flores and Analiz Rodriguez.

Jacob Moss was presented the Academic Award.

The tennis program’s Most Valuable Players were Max Camarena and Alejandra Solar.

Golf was the final program to present its awards. Head coach Oscar Cardenas did the honors.

On the boys’ side, Most Improved went to Andrew Klinck and Mark Peña.

The Caddy Boy Golfer Award, which is presented to the golfer that best displays respect, use of time and effort in practice, went to Zeke De La Cruz.

Isaac Diaz was named Freshman Golfer of the Year. Diaz was also named the Male Golfer of the Year and the Most Outstanding Male Golfer of the Year after he was in the top 10 of each of the tournaments he played in during the regular season, winning the district championship and finishing 10th at the regional tournament.

The Senior Golfer Award went to Adali Hernandez and Joelda Alcaraz. Alcaraz also earned First Team Academic All-State recognition as she finished her senior year at the top of her class.

Becca Mitchell was named Female Golfer of the Year and Most Outstanding Female Golfer of the Year, capping her season by finishing third at district and helping the Queens advance to the regional tournament with a second place showing at district.
