Del Rio may have missed out on a district track title, but the Rams gave it a good run.
The Rams finished second as a team at the District 30-6A Track and Field Meet held in Laredo this past week. Del Rio amassed 138 points, falling just short of eventual meet champions Laredo Alexander’s 148.
Del Rio will still be represented at the upcoming Area meet as the top four finishers in each event advanced.
Zane Hughes will enter the Area meet as a three-time district champion. He won the 200 meters in 22.252 seconds and was part of the district champion 4×100 meter and 4×200 meter relay teams.
Hughes teamed with Jovahn West, Juan “Chili” Peralta and Elian De La Paz to win the 400-meter relay in 42.872 seconds. He then joined West, Peralta and Devonta Reyes to win the 800-meter relay in 1:29.114.
Hughes will also compete in the long jump after taking fourth with a leap of 20 feet, 10 ½ inches.
Hughes wasn’t the only Ram to win multiple district titles. Alan Dobbins took first in the triple jump with a distance of 43 feet, 3 ¼ inches. He also won the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.
Perry McIntire was also a district champion for the Rams, winning the pole vault by clearing 13 feet.
West will find himself competing in multiple events at the Area meet. Aside from relay races, West qualified in the 100 meters by taking second in 11.463 seconds. He was also third in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 11 ¾ inches.
Manuel Padilla advanced to compete in the discus after finishing second at district with a throw of 139 feet, 3 inches.
Mikael Perez also advanced to Area after finishing third in the 800 meters in a time of 2:03.252.
Peralta will compete solo in the 200 meters as he was fourth at district in 23.132 seconds.
Also running solo will be De La Paz after he finished fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 51.433 seconds.
Hector Rodriguez took fourth in the discus to qualify for Area with a throw of 133 feet, 3 inches.
Several Rams also contributed to the team by earning points in their events. Points were awarded to the top six finishers in each event.
McIntire was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.886 seconds.
De La Paza, Ethan Vasquez, Jose Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez were fifth in the 4×400 in 3:33.686.
Reyes took fifth in the long jump after leaping 20 feet, 7 ½ inches.
Padilla was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, 3 ¼ inches.
Juanandres Flores was fifth in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 10 feet, 6 inches.
McIntire was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.241 seconds.
Jonathan Mendoza was sixth in the 3,200 meters in 10:27.82.
VARSITY GIRLS
Del Rio’s girls were third in the team standings behind district champs Laredo Alexander and runners-up Laredo United.
Like the Rams, the Queens’ track and field team featured more than one district champion and athletes that qualified in more than one event.
Myla Tabora was a district champion and a qualifier in multiple events. She won the 100 meters in 13.114 seconds. She also qualified for the Area meet in the 4×100 along with Rebaca Camposano, Makayli Manriquez and Hayden Garcia as they finished second in 50.093 seconds. Tabora also qualified in the long jump by finishing fourth with a leap of 16 feet, 7 inches.
Danielle Almanza won the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, 6 ¾ inches.
Ariana Erickson was a multiple qualifier as well. She was second in the 100 meters in 13.119 seconds; was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.741 seconds; and was third in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.322 seconds.
Emily Torres took second in the 3,200 meters in 11:45.140 to qualify for the Area meet.
Kimberly Gloria will be competing in multiple events at Area. She was third in the 3,200 meters in 11:56.155 and was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:25.837. She also finished sixth in the 1,600 meters in 5:36.602 to earn points for the Queens.
The 4×400 meter relay team of Sierra Horton, Luz Guerra, Ryland Ross and Addie Weston were third in the event in 4:14.02 to move on to Area. Horton and Weston also teamed with Camposano and Manriquez to take fourth in the 4×200 in 1:47.850.
Guerra will also compete in the 400 meters after taking fourth in 1:02.228.
Marissa Hernandez also qualified for Area by taking fourth in the discus with a throw of 100 feet, 11 inches.
Earning points for Del Rio were Ross (5th in the 400 meters, 1:02.948; 6th in the 800 meters, 2:28.577), Weston (5th in the triple jump, 32 feet, 8 inches; 6th in the 200 meters, 27.786 seconds), Madelyn Hernandez, who was fifth in the pole vault after clearing 8 feet, 6 inches; and Amaris Leon, who was sixth in the pole vault by clearing 8 feet, 6 inches.
This year’s Area meet will be held Friday, April 21, at the Student Activity Complex in Laredo.
