Del Rio High School senior Anthony Huizar is looking to be the second local powerlifter to qualify for this year’s state competition.
Huizar, known as “Chop” to many, and his powerlifting coaches will travel to Edinburg this weekend to compete in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s Region V, Division I championships. At stake is a spot in the state meet in Abilene later this month.
Huizar has been one of Del Rio’s most consistent lifters this year. He comes into this weekend’s regional meet ranked fifth in the 308-pound weight class.
At the Del Rio Power Invitational in February he posted the fourth heaviest total weight lifted of all competitors at 1,515 pounds. That total weight included a 625-pound squat, a 355-pound bench press and a 535-pound deadlift.
As this season has progressed, he’s only gotten better.
He racked up 1,455 pounds at the Panther Power Invitational in January, and then followed that up with 1,480 pounds at the Uvalde Invitational Jan. 29.
After his showing in Del Rio, Huizar upped his bench press and squat totals by 10 pounds each to finish the Wildcat Invitational with 1,535 pounds, second behind only Carrizo Springs’ Alfredo Segura’s 1,700 pounds.
If Huizar can hit his qualifying weight then he would join fellow senior Megan Adams as the only two Del Rio lifters to qualify for state this year.
