A pair of Del Rio High seniors were recognized as two of the best boys basketball players in District 30-6A this season.
Brandon Ker was named the district’s co-Offensive Player of the Year while senior Alan Dobbins was named co-Defensive Player of the Year as the district’s awards were released this week.
Ker, the Rams’ leading scorer this season, shared offensive player honors with Laredo Alexander’s Andrew Munguia and Eagle Pass’ Santiago Garza. Ker and Garza put on show in front of Del Rio fans Feb. 16 when Eagle Pass and Del Rio met with a spot in the playoffs on the line. Garza scored 32 to lead all scorers, but Ker’s 27 points helped send the Rams into the postseason.
Dobbins, who scored the game-winning basket in the Del Rio/Eagle Pass game, shared defensive player honors with Laredo United’s Sebastian Guajardo. Rams head coach Joe Nieto said Dobbins had worked to improve all facets of his game, especially on defense. He had five steals against the Eagles but frustrated Eagle Pass’ gameplan on more than one possession.
While Del Rio didn’t have a first team selection on the all-district teams, Alexis Flores was named to the all-district second team and Angel Contreras was named as an all-district honorable mention.
Logan Sutton was Del Rio’s sole representative on the district’s all-academic team.
