Del Rio’s runners made an early statement in this year’s cross country schedule, sweeping all the races at this year’s Del Rio High School Invitational Cross Country Meet.
Saturday morning’s meet drew just three schools – Del Rio, Brackett and Comstock – but all three schools were represented at last year’s State meet and the first steps towards a return to the State course at Round Rock were taken on the course behind Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
Del Rio’s won the team titles at the boys and girls varsity, junior varsity/small school and middle school divisions. Of the four races held, Del Rio runners were first in three of them. Only Brackett’s Anna Lewis kept it from being a clean sweep for Del Rio’s harriers as she won the small varsity/junior varsity girls race.
Del Rio Head Cross Country Coach Vicky Perez said the small turnout was due to other schools holding meets the same weekend, but the Del Rio meet would give her a chance to where her runners are starting the season.
The results are as follows:
VARSITY GIRLS – 5K
Del Rio was the only team represented in the varsity girls 5K race. Of the eight girls who ran, junior Emily Torres was the fastest, finishing in 19:36. Torres is the defending District 30-6A champion and was Del Rio’s sole representative at State last year.
