It’s been a memorable week for Jack Mayfield.
“Captain” Jack smashed a three-run home Thursday night that proved to be the difference in the Los Angeles Angels’ 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.
It was the second home run in the past seven days for the 2009 Del Rio High School graduate. He blasted a solo shot to deep centerfield in a 9-4 win over his former team, the Seattle Mariners.
The Los Angeles Times’ Jack Harris described Mayfield’s at-bat as such:
“After José Iglesias doubled (his second of the game) and Adam Eaton singled, Jack Mayfield came to the plate and initially tried to bunt in a 1-1 count.
“His attempt was poor, a pop up that landed in the seats behind the Twins dugout.
“Three pitches later, however, he made up for it, smoking a three-run homer into the left field seats to give the Angels the lead.”
Mayfield is making the most of his time with the Angels. It’s his second stint with the Halos after he signed with the team earlier this season following his release by the Atlanta Braves. He appeared in only two games for Los Angeles before he was designated for release and signed by the Mariners.
Mayfield appeared in 11 games for the Mariners before Seattle released him June 10. The Angels snatched him back up three days later and sent him to their minor league team in Salt Lake City, Utah, before calling him up to the main roster July 6 in the wake of an injury to starting third baseman Anthony Rendon.
Mayfield has seen more time in the field and at the plate for the Angels since being called July 6. Those additional appearances have also helped the former all-district Rams infielder/pitcher raise his batting average from .156 to .211 this season.
The Angels are scheduled to face the Twins again today at 3:10 p.m. Del Rio time. As of this writing, the starting lineups had yet to be release, but Mayfield has started at third base in four of the Angels’ last five games.
Mayfield played for four years at the University of Oklahoma before he signed as an undrafted free agent by the Houston Astros in 2013. He made his major league debut on May 27, 2019, ripping a double off the wall in his first major league at-bat.
