SPORTS — Middle school boys take team title at Spartan meet

Del Rio Middle School’s boys cross-country team picked up a little hardware this weekend to add to its trophy case.

The team took first place in its division at the San Antonio Spartan Cross Country meet at the Joshua Springs Park and Preserve. Del Rio ran three teams in the boys race with Del Rio 1 taking first with 26 points, Del Rio 2 taking third place with 112 points and Del Rio 3 finishing sixth with 157 points.

Del Rio 1 had a dominating performance, placing six of its seven runners in the top 10 overall. Leading the group was Alexander Perez who was third overall in a time of 12:26.455.

Perez’s third place finish led a group of Del Rio runners that took the third through sixth spots. Following Perez were Jacob Saucedo, who was fourth in 12:44.981; Julian Dominguez, who was fifth in 12:45.264; and Leo Cavazos, who was sixth in 12:57.356.

After missing out on seventh place, Del Rio’s next two runners crossed the finish line within seconds of each other. Julyus Calderon was eighth in 13:06.346 and Daniel Perez was ninth in 13:09.672.

Del Rio’s seventh runner cracked the top 15 as Ethan Jurado was 14th overall in 13:26.303.

Del Rio 2 placed its six runners in the top 50 overall. Abraham Cardenas was the team’s top runner, coming in 11th overall in 13:11.274. Trent Serwatka took 18th in 13:44.870. Reynaldo De Los Santos was 25th in 14:28.835, and Michael Carriaga was 27th in 14:47.585.

Rounding out the team were Ray Torres, who was 31st in 15:03.528; and Carlos Jaquez, who was 36th in 15:08.200.

Del Rio 3 featured five runners, but all five also finished among the top 50 overall.

Armando Villanueva led the team, finishing 23rd in 14:26.498. Teammate Jesus Robles was close behind, finishing 24th in 14:28.129. Jose Gallegos was 33rd in 15:07.533, Abraham Garcia was 35th in 15:08.157, and Alexavier Medina was 42nd in 15:40.939.

Ten teams and 101 runners competed in the middle school boys division.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS

Del Rio Middle School’s girls teams also fared well at the Spartan meet, taking fifth and sixth among 10 teams competing.

Del Rio 1 just missed out on fourth place by four points as all but one of its runners finished in the top 30.

Karissa Martinez was 19th in 16:04.064, and teammate Devyn Casillas was just behind her in 20th place in 16:06.031. Nelly Zavala was 22nd in 16:09.951, Camila Fernandez was 23rd in 16:15.120, Gabriela Diaz finished 26th in 16:51.209; Eunice Martinez was 29th in 16:59.188, and Celeste Garcia was 32nd in 17:04.341.

Del Rio 2 finished 21 points behind their teammates to take sixth overall.

Reba Salinas led Del Rio 2 as she was 17th in 15:58.878. Anna Curtis was 25th in 16:36.723, Aniah Gonzales was 28th in 16:58.262, Karyme Valencia was 30th in 17:00.026, Camila De Los Santos was 31st in 17:00.494, Isabella Valdez was 39th in 17:36.067, and Hazel Altman was 44th in 18:00.481.
