William “Lefty” Mitchell took his time to make a collegiate choice, but his faith has guided him the entire way.

Mitchell, a former senior on the Del Rio Rams baseball team, was surrounded by friends and family when he put pen to paper and officially became a member of the University of the Southwest’s family. The small school in Hobbs, N.M., describes itself as “inspired by Christian values” that offers a unique blend of academics and athletics for undergraduates, ensuring a well-rounded experience.

“When we first visited there I fell in love with the school. It was small, it wasn’t a partying school. I’ll be there for a degree in business and to receive my education.” Mitchell said, who will major in finance and minor in accounting with an eye on becoming a forensic accountant.

Mitchell was one of the last members of the Rams seniors to commit to playing collegiate baseball. He will be joined in Hobbs by teammate Arturo Ramos. Other late signees included Sebastian Garcia, who will attend Nelson University, and Tres McCrea, who will attend Arlington Baptist University.

The son of Kami and Christopher Mitchell, Lefty has played baseball since the time he could walk. He remembers learning to slide headfirst at his grandparents home when he was two and began learning under his father beginning at the age of three.

When he turned seven, Mitchell focused on pitching. His arm carried him through every level of the game, but two years ago he felt a pain in his triceps. The pain became too much and Mitchell sought a solution from doctors and specialists. As it turns out, he was suffering calcification in his arm. It didn’t mean an end to his baseball career, but it did mean he would have to step away from the diamond as he recovered.

“It was a big setback for me, but thanks to my recovery and rehab I was able to get back to playing,” Mitchell said. “As of right now, I’ve got the whole summer to work and grind and focus on getting bigger.”

Mitchell’s work to return never waivered, and that’s helped him focus not just on the now but on the road ahead. He said that’s been part of his mindset as he prepares for life beyond high school.

“You have to have confidence. It’s that confident mindset that’s helped me be able to do the things I need to do to improve and it’s helped me focus on the future.” Mitchell said. “The support I’ve received from my family and the people who helped me recover helped mentally and the support they give me helps me a lot. My parents have always taught me to be mentally strong always, and my faith has reminded me that no matter what God has us on this earth for a reason.”
