Brackettville’s Abraham Morales is a two-time state champion.
Morales, a junior at Brackett High School, won the Class 2A State Championship in the 3,200 meters Friday morning in a time of 9:40.58. He easily claimed the state title by more than 20 seconds over the next closest finisher, Matthew Moralez of Premont, who finished in 10:04.11.
Morales wasn’t done, though.
Late that day, he won the 1,600 meters in 4:26.54, beating out Moralez by just over five seconds.
According to Brackett ISD, Morales set a Class 2A, Region IV record in both events. He won the 1,600 meters in 4:29.95 and won the 3,200 meters in 9:44.82. He bested both those times at state.
Morales was one of two Tigers competing at the state meet in Austin this weekend. Senior Cole Paxton would also compete as he sought to capture a state championship in the shot put and discus.
Paxton qualified for the shot put with a region-best throw of 56 feet, 2.75 inches, nearly seven feet further than the second place finisher. He also won the region title in the discus with a throw of 159 feet, 5 inches, 10 feet further than the next closest thrower.
At state, Paxton came up short of a state title.
He was third in the shot put with a throw of 55 feet, 1/2 inch. The winning throw was made by Samuel Holcomb of Floydada whose shot landed at 57 feet, 2.25 inches.
In the discus, Paxton finished sixth after a throw of 156 feet, 10 inches. The top throw was made by Michael Jitjaeng of Big Sandy who hit 183 feet on his sixth and final throw.
