The race for the playoffs is coming down to the final week for Del Rio’s boys.
The Rams put themselves in right in the thick of things with a 1-0 win over Laredo Alexander Friday night. Del Rio’s Alfain Peñaloza scored the only goal of the match.
The win gives the Rams 17 points with two matches left to play. Teams in District 30-6A are awarded three points for every win, one point for a draw and additional point for winning the shootout in the draw.
Del Rio has five wins, two draws and three losses. The Rams are currently in third place behind district-leading Laredo LBJ (24 points – 6 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss) and second place Laredo Alexander (22 points – 6 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss).
The Rams travel to Laredo Wednesday to face United South at 7:30 p.m. at Krueger Field. They’ll close the regular season Friday, March 18, when they host the Eagle Pass Eagles at 6:30 p.m. at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
The last time Del Rio and United South met, the Panthers escaped with a 1-0 win thanks to a diving header. The Rams will look to beat South by at least two goals to establish a stronger hold on third place. The two teams are tied for the third spot in the district with 17 points a piece, but they’re both tied with Laredo Nixon.
Nixon’s regular season ends Tuesday, so Del Rio and United South will go into their final match next weekend knowing what they have to do to secure a playoff spot.
