District play has arrived for the Del Rio Queens basketball team, and the team had a strong showing in its first 30-6A contest even in defeat.
Del Rio traveled to Laredo Friday to face the LBJ Lady Wolves. The Wolves, who split its two games with the Queens last season, came away with the 55-48 win over Del Rio Friday night.
It was a rough first half that helped do in the Queens. After keeping pace in the first quarter, Del Rio was held to just three points in the second quarter. That left the Queens down 30-17 at halftime.
The Queens picked up the pace in the second half, outscoring LBJ 16-13 in the third quarter and 15-12 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to make up the first half deficit Del Rio found itself in.
Joselyn Gonzalez led the Queens with 17 points. She also had eight steals and four assists. Alexia Muñiz had nine points, Marina Jimenez scored eight points and had nine rebounds, Karolina Alderete and Makayka Lewis each had six points, and Allie Rodriguez had two points. Annette Betancourt was shutout in the scoring column, but the post pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Del Rio.
LBJ’s Leilani Medina led all scorers with 25 points.
UNITED SOUTH 71, DEL RIO 35
Del Rio played in front of the home fans Tuesday night, but had a tall task against the formidable Laredo United South Lady Panthers.
The short-handed Queens kept it close in the first half, scoring in double digits in both the first and second quarters and trailing by just five, 27-22, at halftime. Del Rio dressed out only nine players for the game.
But the Lady Panthers poured it on in the third quarter, outscoring Del Rio 25-7 as they pulled away in the final two quarters for a 71-35 win.
Muñiz led Del Rio with 14 points. Betancourt had five points, Gonzalez and Rodriguez each had four points, and Kaitlyn Lewis and Jimenez each had two points. Betancourt also had eight rebounds while Muñiz, Gonzalez and Jimenez had three assists each.
After two district games, United South, Laredo Alexander and Laredo United are all 2-0. Laredo LBJ is 1-1 after dropping its contest to Alexander by three on Tuesday. Del Rio and Eagle Pass are both 0-2.
Del Rio will be at Laredo on Friday to face United at 7 p.m., and then will head back to Laredo Tuesday, Jan. 17, to take on Laredo Alexander at 6:30 p.m.
The Queens will close out the first half of district play Friday, Jan. 20 when they host Eagle Pass at 6:30 p.m.
