The season is drawing to a close for the Queens basketball team, but just being able to finish the season is a win for the program.

After weeks of being on hold due to COVID-19 protocols, the Del Rio Queens have been able to make up the games that had been postponed and are nearing the end of this season. Currently Del Rio is 2-7 in District 30-6A with the latest game a 66-39 loss at Laredo Alexander Tuesday.

Overall the Queens are 14-17.

Del Rio was able to play its first three district games with no issues, but the Jan. 7 game against Alexander had to be postponed due to concerns regarding COVID at the Laredo school. The Queens also had to postpone their Jan. 11 game against Laredo United South but were finally able to get back on track Jan. 14 against Eagle Pass.

But the good times didn’t last as the Jan. 21 game against Laredo LBJ had to be rescheduled to Saturday, Feb. 5.

Tuesday was Del Rio’s last game in Laredo for the season, and the Lady Bulldogs left their mark on the game early.

Alexander jumped out an 18-6 lead in the first quarter as the Queens were unable to get out of the starting blocks with any momentum. By halftime, Alexander had built its lead to 37-13.

Del Rio fared better in the second half with nine points in the third quarter and 17 points in the fourth, but Alexander stayed out in front with 29 points in the second half.

Sydney Ballard led the Queens with 12 points after being held scoreless in the first quarter. Karolina Alderete had six points, Alexia Muñiz, Allie Rodriguez and Nelly Robles each had four points, Joselyn Gonzalez had three points, and Debanhi Padilla, Makayla Lewis, and Sharleen Perez each had two points.

Del Rio is scheduled to host Laredo United South tonight at 6 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.

Saturday, Del Rio welcomes Laredo LBJ to Guys Gym for a 2:30 p.m. match-up.

The Queens will wrap up their season Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Eagle Pass High at 7 p.m.
