Del Rio won its girls basketball season opener the first time they stepped onto the court at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
Tuesday things didn’t go the same way.
Playing a tough Crystal City team, the Queens were held to 12 first half points en route to a 59-28 loss. Del Rio drops to 3-4 on the season.
Crystal City took a 14-9 lead in the first quarter and never relinquished the advantage, building a 28-12 lead by halftime. Del Rio scored in double digits in just one quarter – the fourth – while Crystal City scored at least 12 points in every quarter.
“We’ve just got to keep grinding and working hard to get better,” Queens head coach Marisa Soto said.
It didn’t help that Del Rio went 8-for-19 from the free throw line in the contest.
The game did mark the return of post Laila Betancourt. Betancourt, who has been a solid player in the paint since debuting as a freshman, had missed Del Rio’s first six games though she was dressed in regular clothes and on the bench for the Queens’ season opener.
Sydney Ballard led the Queens with 10 points. Betancourt had six points, Joselyn Gonzalez and Nelly Robles each scored five points, and Allie Rodriguez had two points.
This weekend the Queens are scheduled to travel to San Antonio and compete in the Southside Tournament.
Del Rio’s next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. versus Sonora.
