At this point it’s not a matter if the Del Rio Queens soccer team will win the district championship, but when.
With an 8-0 win over Laredo Alexander Friday night, the Queens maintained a three-point lead over Laredo Nixon with two matches left to play in the regular season.
However, Nixon’s final match of the regular season will be Tuesday while the Queens still have matches Tuesday and Friday. The Queens swept Nixon in head-to-head competition, winning both matches 4-0.
Del Rio clinched at least a share of the District 30-6A crown with the win over Alexander. Jadyn Casillas had three goals, and Cassandra Ochoa, Laurie Ignacio, Andrea Sauceda, Mia Ortiz and Xitali Guadalajara each had a goal. Sauceda also had a pair of assists, while Alondra Sanchez, Ortiz and a returning Giselle Castañeda each had one assist.
Del Rio also holds an advantage over third place Laredo United. They beat the Lady Longhorns and battled to a 2-2 draw in their second meeting before United picked up an additional point by winning in the shootout. The Queens hold a 4-3 goal differential against United and a six-point lead in the standings.
Del Rio is first overall with 28 points, with three points awarded for a win, one point for a draw and an additional point for winning the post match shootout. The Queens have 9 wins and 1 draw in 10 district matches.
Nixon is second with 25 points (8 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses), United is third with 22 points (5 wins, 4 draws, 1 loss), and United South (3 wins, 2 draws, 5 losses) is tied with Alexander (4 wins, 0 draws, 6 losses) in fourth with 12 points.
Del Rio will host Laredo United South in its final regular season home match Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Queens will then close out their regular season Monday, March 21, at Eagle Pass at 7:30 p.m.
