The first half of the District 30-6A volleyball season reached its conclusion this weekend, and the break may be just what the Del Rio Queens look to regroup and prepare for what they hope could be a strong run in the second half.

Del Rio closed the first half district play Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles. Del Rio lost 25-17, 25-22, 25-16 to fall to 12-15 overall and 0-6 in district play.

To make matters worse for Del Rio, the Queens lost libero Angela Mijares to injury in the second game. Mijares, who had been battling an injury to the lower left side of her body for more than a week, was physically unable to continue and had to be helped to the bench by trainers and coaches. She was eventually taken from the court in a wheelchair to undergo further medical evaluation.

The second game saw Del Rio put together one of its best efforts. The Queens were able to cut the deficit to 16-15 before Eagle Pass scored the next three points to push its lead to 19-15 before Del Rio called a timeout to regroup.

The score grew to 21-15 before the Queens were able to break Eagle Pass’ serve.

Shortly after that is when Mijares’ injury occurred and there was a break in the action.

Her absence left just four girls on the Queens bench, but Del Rio rallied. A Karolina Alderete kill trimmed Eagle Pass’ lead to 25-22, but the Queens were called for an illegal hit on the next serve and Eagle Pass claimed the game.

On Tuesday, Del Rio traveled to Laredo to take on the United South Lady Panthers. Del Rio lost in three games, 25-13, 25-23, 25-20.

The Queens have an open date on Tuesday, Oct. 5, before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 9, when they resume district play against Laredo LBJ. That match will be held at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium with sub-varsity taking the court at 11:30 and varsity scheduled to play at 1 p.m. Fans should make plans to arrive earlier as Del Rio has been playing its varsity home matches at 12:30 p.m. recently.
