The Del Rio Queens are unbeaten through the first two days of the Edgewood Tournament in San Antonio, rolling to a 6-0 record and a spot in Saturday’s bracket play.
Del Rio opened the tournament Thursday with three straight victories, defeating San Antonio Kennedy in two sets, Lanier in three sets and Poteet in two.
The Queens picked up where they left off Friday, sweeping Eagle Pass C.C. Winn in two sets before defeating Pleasanton in three sets.
The victory over Pleasanton completed a perfect 5-0 run through pool play and gave Del Rio first place heading into the tournament bracket.
The Queens then faced San Antonio Memorial in their first bracket match Friday afternoon and continued their unbeaten run with another two-set victory.
The team is coming off a brutal 2025 campaign that left the Queens on the outside of the playoffs and ranked No. 780 in Texas by MaxPreps. However, judging by the early tournament results, things are looking up.
Del Rio head coach Veronica Rivera said the Queens’ early success is the result of work that began almost immediately after last season ended.
“Not surprised one bit!” Rivera said. “Offseason (the team) has been at it since last November. But 100% of this team showed up all summer to open gym and strength and conditioning. Hard work is paying off.”
Through six matches, Del Rio has won 12 of the 14 sets it has played.
The Queens will return to the court Saturday at 11 a.m. as bracket play continues at the Edgewood Tournament.
