Del Rio’s unbeaten streak in volleyball has come to an end, but the Queens have a chance to start a new one Tuesday night.

The Queens traveled to Laredo Friday and were swept in three sets by the Laredo United Lady Longhorns, 25-15, 25-12 and 25-17. The loss drops Del Rio to 16-9 overall and 2-1 in District 30-6A. It also sends the Queens to third place behind unbeaten United and Laredo Alexander.

United improves to 28-4 overall and 3-0 in district.

Del Rio is scheduled to travel back to Laredo Tuesday to face the Alexander Lady Bulldogs at 7 p.m. A win by the Queens would put them into second place.

Alexander needed all five sets to get past a tough Laredo United South team this weekend. Alexander dropped the first set 25-18, took the second set 25-16, fell in a grueling third set 29-27, and then forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

In the fifth set, Alexander was too much for South, outlasting the Lady Panthers for a 15-13 win and a 3-2 match victory. Alexander is now 3-0 in district.

Laredo LBJ earned its first district win of the season, beating Eagle Pass in three sets to improve to 1-2 in district play. The Lady Eagles drop to 0-3 and they and United South remain the only winless teams in 30-6A. Those two teams will meet Tuesday night.

The Queens and Lady Eagles will renew their rivalry Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium as the first half of district play comes to an end.
