The Queens are doing all the right things, but they are missing just one little piece.

Monday the Queens varsity basketball team dropped a close game to the Eagle Pass C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks, 41-39.

The loss drops the Queens to 6-7 on the season, but head coach Marisa Soto point to her team’s fighting to the end as a sign things are moving in the right direction.

“The kids played hard. We were down by 10 with 1:30 left and came back to within two. We had :04 to take it full court and did that and had a chance to win it at the buzzer but missed a long three rimmed in and out,” Soto said. “Proud of the girls’ relentless effort! It’s good experience to have come district time.”

Del Rio trailed by two points, 11-9, after the end of the first quarter, but the Queens turned things around in the second quarter and took a 19-18 lead into halftime.

The back and fourth fight between the two teams continued into the third quarter as Winn reclaimed the lead, 28-26, headed into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Del Rio down big, but the Queens clawed their way back into the game thanks to Alexia Muñiz. Scoreless up until the fourth, Muñiz hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points in the final period, which was more than half of the team’s total for the quarter.

Sydney Ballard led Del Rio with 12 points, Muñiz finished with eight points, Joselyn Gonzalez had seven points, Marina Jimenez had five points, Allie Rodriguez and Sierra Horton each had two points, and Sharleen Perez had one point.

The team was without Laila Betancourt, who returned against Crystal City and earned all-tournament honors at the Southside tournament this past weekend.

Del Rio returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 30, when they travel to San Antonio to face South San at 7 p.m.

Their next home game will be Tuesday, Dec. 7 against Sonora at 5 p.m.
