The Del Rio Queens brought plenty of hustle and fight Saturday afternoon, but district co-leader Laredo United pulled away for a three-set volleyball victory.
The Lady Longhorns won 25-17, 25-15, 25-10, improving to 6-0 in District 30-6A. Del Rio fell to 1-5 in district play and 12-9 overall.
The Queens matched United point for point early in the opening set, drawing even at 14. From there, the Lady Longhorns outscored Del Rio 11-3 to take the set.
United built a 16-6 lead in the second set. The Queens narrowed the gap but could not complete the comeback. United then closed out the match with a 25-10 win in the third.
Del Rio remains outside the district’s top four playoff positions with eight matches left. The Queens have already faced both unbeaten district leaders, Alexander and United, and still have time to make a run at their first postseason berth since 2017.
If the Queens had a soundtrack, it would have been the sound of skin squeaking across the floor as they never slowed down, diving and battling in rallies that should make Sports Center’s Top 10 plays.Â
Tuesday’s match at Eagle Pass offers an immediate opportunity. Both teams enter at 1-5 in district play.
Del Rio’s junior varsity also battled United. The Queens won the opening set 25-23 before dropping the next two, 25-13 and 25-18. The deciding set was tied at 11, drawing the varsity players away from their pregame preparations to cheer on their teammates.
